About Meet Gus -
For my second Newman Project entry:
This is Gus (Gustavo Moreno) who was born in Mexico. He stopped for me by the natural light coming into his garage. He learned English, immigrated, became a citizen, married and started his own business with a partner who left shortly after they opened. He is a kind and honest man, unique for this industry here . . . but can't get rich since the community is poor. He works long hours and has employees like Bert. Gus's daughter, Frine, married my son. She watches our two grandchildren in Fort Drum, N.Y. until he returns from Afghanistan (10th Mtn. Rangers). Gus, Marlyce and I all hope for the best - and enjoy the grandkids.
Meet Gus.

I like your portrait. Simple and well done. Funny how when you look at him the words you have used to describe him is what entered my mind already before reading your comments.

greetings doyle, speaking as an amateur, the only advice i can offer is what i came away from googling newman was two types of portrait, the full close in your lens shots had minimum backgrounds with no distractions and the long shots with something also in the frame that says something about the subjects life, job, etc, a clue if you like,. i may have to go back to newman just to confirm what i have just said, lol,. i think by now you must have got the idea of what it is i'm not sure about in your two portraits ( it maybe the background ) otherwise IMO no other fault ,at all. doyle , thank you sincerely for the appraisal on my portrait #1 very much appreciated, regards art,.

Great shot for the project. Nicely composed and good tones. Gus, along with one of my best friends, is a good example of proper immigration into the country. Best wishes and much gratitude to your son.

Thanks Mary!! Pictures do make a wonderful escape. While I could never complain considering the young men absent from their families . . . a world away . . . and, obviously doing a yuckee job while in danger . . . These excursions are not that easy on the family at home either. Perhaps Raul Julia would be better for the role? LoL!

I hope for the best for you too Doyle. Life is so hard that is why we get lost in pictures for a time I reckon. Anyhows, this is a brilliant image. Again the details and B&W really bring out the character you'd want to know more of. Like Robert de Niro acting him in a film of his life.

Nice entry into the project Doyle. And what a wonderful about.
If this were my photo I would consider cropping on the right even with the vertical post. And cropping the top just slightly into his hair.
God bless your son-in-law and bring him home safely!

Very kind of you Jeanette! I hope to learn how to do what you already do quite well! By the way, just to clear the record for Gus . . . it's not a cigar . . . it's a tool. Perhaps one of the cleanest cut mechanics I've ever met. Note the white shirt! Gus doesn't smoke. Thanks for the comment though . . . from somebody who does portraits like you, it's an ego boost for sure!

Thnaks Ray . . . I'd rather have your advice (Real, technical advice) on florals anyway. Of course, you kind words of encouragement are helpful anywhere and on portraits--like this--your feelings would help. I care little for rules. I want to know what I'm doing is or is not effective . . . and blaze my own trail! You, my friend, are ideal for that!

Thanks very much John! I can't tell you how much the comment means to me. I'm suprised this caught your eye as I don't know you as a portrait photographer. Still . . . I'm an admitted dillatente . . . good at many things . . . master of none! The strength here at UF and (in my opinion) the reason for the projects--is to improve our skill. Google Newman and put up a portrait . . . what can the new knowledge hurt??

I love this pose with the tilt to the head Doyle and the 'electricity' in the direct eye contact. Great lighting again and good mono tones to this portrait. I only dabble in bits of portraiture my friend and I am unable to pass on any advice. I like what you have got here, well taken. All the best.....Ray

I will call this a character study, cause when I look into those eyes, I see a man of character, cheerful and as you stated industrious. Great tones and contrast.

Thanks so much for the comment. I felt the shot had some strengths and apparently some work on the composition is warranted (centrality issues) but I appreciate your feedback!

Thanks Howie . . . good points to consider and a common mistake of composition (apparently with portraits too). Lowering the top crop would cut it too tight, so perhaps lowering the bottom would have added some impact. Looking now, I probably should have pulled the right side in a tad too! Thanks!

I really like the tilt of the head but again, for me at least, the eyes are a little too central in the fram Doyle. I've included a quick candid of one of my daughters portraits I took to emphasise what I mean about eyes in a 1/3 position. Hope you dont mind :)
