Oh, if you've not read it, run and get a copy of Photoshop User Magazine, published by NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals). It's FULL of cool stuff, and I learn a ton with every issue. I enjoy it SO much I joined NAPP.

Man, that's TOO funny, Sal.
Funnier still, when I was showing our in-house Photoshop EXPERT something, and I did the same thing (used the bracket keys). He got all animated, and asked how I did it.

As for displacement maps, imagine applying this image to another (perhaps a building or a landscape) and instead of overlaying any color, this became the basis for texture. A displacement map creates the illusion of 'bumps' or wrinkles when it's applied to another image.

Here's a tutorial on the subject:

Drop me a line, paul@laraimages.com and I'll send you something to make you SMILE!

Use it dude, then teach me: 1) the meaning of a displacement map. 2)How and when to use one.
I'm a veritable sponge for photoshop knowledge....I'm self taught and probably do everything the hard way.
Funny story, I was at the PMA here in Orlando last year and sat in on the adobe photoshop workshop (heaven!) and the PS professor did something with the keyboard that changed the size of the brush he was using w/out moving the mouse. I freaked and raised my hand violently reminescent of Arnold Horseshack and ask "hey, how'd you do that" to which he replied "do what?" and I said "changed the brush size without using the mouse" to which 2/3rds of the class turned to me in unison and said "with the bracket keys!". Man!, my body shrunk to 1:16 scale and hid in the corner in the back of the class for the rest of it. Thoroughly embarrassing but, all in all worth it to get the knowledge.
Sal

Thanks for the information. The technique was unusual but the result was very good. See you around.

Yes James, it is almost completely desaturated...almost, about 90%. I 'channel mixered' it into b&w then I 'history brushed' 10% of the color back. I found it had no life without any color but that it looked amazingly like mercury like this. I really appreciate your comment, you obviously have very refined, yet equally rare taste as you are among a very exclusive group of only 2 commenters.lol
My thanks.

Very cool! I like the little bit of violet...is that a reflection of something?

Very well shot. Did you adjust the colors a little?
