I always appreciate honest comments and I fully understand what you mean by your description on some DSLR work...and you're right in that cameras are tools to be used accordingly.

Cheers again

Manu
PS Good luck with the Anglicans, my friend

Hi Manu,

I read the crrespondence between you and Roger with great interest - a never ending discussion, but that's besides the point. It did give me a good clue on how you manage to create these high def tonal ranges and very strong, yet subtle contrasts which IMO are part of your signature style. Excellent shot, and very well postprocessed. Very cool indeed, great job!

Cheers,

Hugo

Oh dear, I wasn't implying that this beautiful shot had sooty shadows! Just that all too often one DOES get them with DSLRs... I am having lots of fun using HDR + tone-mapping to create shots that combine two or more photos for a wider apparent dynamic range. But it's all trade-offs, no pure gain. To answer your question, I came to Japan originally to work with the church here, which is numerically very small. For some years I was chairman of the mission committee for the Diocese of Tokyo (Anglican).

Hi Roger

Thanks for your comments about the pros and cons of the DSLR...and you may well be correct. But I do need to point out to you the fact that I have indeed palyed a little with this shot..for example the "sooty shadows" have been created on purpose usinf a BW mask and multiplying over the original etc. I would love to experience the large or indeed medium format equipment that you allude to in the near future.

Cheers matey

Manu
PS How did you end up in Japan?

Manu, this is just the kind of photo--with wide dynamic range--that DSLRs don't handle so well, I find. I moved reluctantly to a DSLR because customers expect it, but I must say it's a lot of time and trouble to get similar effects to film from a DSLR (although I must admit there are compensating advantages, too). The usual results are either rather bland because of the limited dynamic range, or have sooty shadows and/or burnt out highlights. By the way, the West Country was home to me when I lived in England... born and brought up in Bristol.
