i love the 'old' feel to this, which i guess is from the car itself.
it's fun looking around your car and seeing things like key chains and an air freshener, and is your mirror always down there??

This is very nice. I've tried to do it before and failed.. I love the way you got the road lines in it, slightly curving. And thanks for the useful comment on my shadows shot! I am putting together a portfolio for applying for internships and that was exactly what I was looking for.

OK, I recognise the influences:
- yes I remember inspirational images from Kostas - yes I remember the song from Queen, although it wasn't until very recently that I realised that it was a Roger Taylor song and that Roger has a fabulous voice in his own right. - yes I remember the DS, a stunning, original, temperamental beast (and a photographer's dream).
But this is a pure Hugo image. And I just dig that tiger keyring!

Wow. (First reaction) Ok, I'll have to try this too . . . I have before but it's hard to hold the car steady . . . take the shot . . . dodge the blows from my wife who's likely screaming at me to put the camera down and put my hands on the wheel . . . avoid colliding with cars, pedestrians and guardrails. Oh, I suppose I could get in the passenger seat and let her drive . . . LoL! Yeah, right! That'll happen!
WAIT! I read your info in the 'about' section. Viola . . . tripod and remote shutter release!! Woooo Hoooo . . . Thanks!! - Should try something like this on my Kawasaki 1200 motorcycle too. :)

Hi Hugo,
Maybe not an original idea, but an idea and perspective I really like. The trailing lights creating the sense of motion is captured perfectly. As a car enthusiast, I can appreciate your love for your car :)
I've always wanted to try a shot like this, either in the car, or shooting from a moving car. Unfortunately a lot of the roads in and around San Francisco aren't smooth enough - and the stiff suspension on my car doesn't help LOL. Very nice work.

Hi Hugo, very creative photo you've made, doesn't mather it isn't origial, to me it is. The shutterspeed and apperture worked out very well to create this shot. However a bit of dark framing such as Manu did give a bit more depth and perspective to this image. But the idea and the execution of it makes this a very good experiment IMO. Take care, cheers,
Klaas

I agree with yourself that this is an original for yourself because I haven't seen you produce this shot before....Apologies for the confusion, old chap..!
Cheers

hi Hugo,
i'm familiar with both your inspirations and i think they helped you effectively to make this beautiful photo :) the personality of your car gives much more impact to the shot and the excellent lighting together with the cute decoration adds to the nice mood. as for the sunshields(?) on top, i also think they should have been cropped out. it remains to be seen what other ideas (and songs) you have in mind but i know you are talented and skilful enough to create even better pictures of this kind in the future ;) well...i'm really flattered to have you and other fellow usefilmers talk about me like that. i hadn't shot any new 'nightrides' since my peugeot died in Dec2004 but i started again two months ago. to make it easier for anyone interested here's the direct link to my 'nightride' portfolio: http://www.usefilm.com/photographer.asp?ID=16994&PF=697

Hi Roger,
I've always dreamed of owning one since I was even younger - my dad had one, and I fell in love with the way the suspension makes the car seem to float when the engine purrs into life - it was one of my first memories. It was the same (type of) car I bought 30 years later, and I'm enjoying ever moment I drive with it... I've never owned any other brand - it's all citroen for me, and I think the newest models (C4 and C6) have the same innovative feel again as citroen had with the DS, and the CX to some extend...:)
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Petal,
I'm not cool...:) I just have a weakness for gadgets...:) I've had a little gadget in every car I owned, and whenever I have to get a new car, they're taken along. The old ones get their (well deserved) retirement as "guardian angel", and are allowed to watch the newest member to the collection to assist me in keeping safe on the road. And until now, it has served me well...:)
And, I'm happy to add, it's not the oil light, but the rear window heater light that you see...:)
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Roby,
Yeah, it's a classic idea - and great fun to try! Hi Renato,
As you know it's Kostas who "invented" this shot, or at least he introduced me to the idea (http://www.usefilm.com/photographer/16994.html).
You, by the way, were the second inspiration with your photo "keep passing the open window".
Apart from I'm In Love with my Car, I also considered:
Don't Stop Me Now Words and music by Freddie Mercury
Tonight I'm gonna have myself a real good time I feel alive and the world turning inside out Yeah! And floating around in ecstasy So don't stop me now don't stop me 'Cause I'm having a good time having a good time
I'm a shooting star leaping through the sky Like a tiger defying the laws of gravity I'm a racing car passing by like Lady Godiva I'm gonna go go go There's no stopping me
I'm burning through the sky Yeah! Two hundred degrees That's why they call me Mister Fahrenheit I'm trav'ling at the speed of light I wanna make a supersonic man out of you
Don't stop me now I'm having such a good time I'm having a ball don't stop me now If you wanna have a good time just give me a call Don't stop me now ('cause I'm havin' a good time) Don't stop me now (yes I'm havin' a good time) I don't want to stop at all
I'm a rocket ship on my way to Mars On a collision course I am a satellite I'm out of control I am a sex machine ready to reload Like an atom bomb about to Oh oh oh oh oh explode
I'm burning through the sky Yeah! Two hundred degrees That's why they call me Mister Fahrenheit I'm trav'ling at the speed of light I wanna make a supersonic woman of you
Don't stop me don't stop me Don't stop me hey hey hey! Don't stop me don't stop me ooh ooh ooh (I like it) Don't stop me don't stop me Have a good time good time Don't stop me don't stop me Ah

Hi Joggie,
I'm nowhere near the 15 years, but it's such a delight to drive.... This is the '73 Pallas 23 IE version, and it's still such a smooth ride - I hope to cherrish that for quite some time to come...
There's a slight tremour in it at high speeds, but at 120km/h it's still very smooth. The reasonable stillness of the photo is a combination of both, I guess. I did chose a smooth stretch of motorway, though.
I guess I have a weakness for gadgets in my car, and as I still have the gadgets I had in each of the cars I owned, I have quite a collection on my dashboard...:)

Hugo

Hi Ursula,
This is not that difficult, I just taped my tripod to the back side of the front seats, and set the camera to self timer. Pretty straight forward, using in camera metering on Aperture Value.
Yeah, it's a tiger, but no hairbrush...:) I'm a sucker for car decorations - had a little gadget in every car I owned, and whenever I have to get a new car, they're taken along. The old ones get their (well deserved) retirement as "guardian angel", and are allowed to watch the newest member to the collection to assist me in keeping safe on the road. Hi Manu,
Pretentious, heh? I'm just realistic, it's not my idea, and as Jason says, it's almost one of those mandatory photos worth trying, and good fun to do as well...
It may be an original for me, as it's the first time I tried it, but that doesn't make it "original", don't you think?
Anyway - it wasn't meant pretentious.
I'm a sucker for car decorations - had a little gadget in every car I owned, and whenever I have to get a new car, they're taken along. I like the wider frame - and you're spot on with the top, thought about that, but couldn't really made up my mind, so I left it as it was....
Thanks,
Cheers,

Hi Max,
I just needed to try it, and it's good fun too... I was driving well within the speed limit, about 120 km/h. I felt the urge to put the pedal to the metal, but the shots I took while driving 170 km/h didn't do the feel much good...:) But what a thrill to feel the ol' engine purr... I wasn't even maxing the car to it's top speed, either!
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Renato,
The idea didn't require much creativity - it's Kostas who "invented" this shot, or at least he introduced me to the idea (http://www.usefilm.com/photographer/16994.html).
Queen Rocks - have a chat with Roberto about that. He was the second inspiration with one of his photos called "keep passing the open window".
I dig your idea to One Vision, and would like to respond in kind: Don't Stop Me Now Words and music by Freddie Mercury

Hi Jason,
Thanks for your comment. I had to remove some dustspots, and worked on the levels just a bit (nothing too severe), but left the image otherwise untouched. I kept the interior light on, so I didn't need to bracket the photo. Also given the interior of the car, but primarily due the rather subdued light, that explains the "chocolate" tone of this photo...

A very natural feeling when it comes to that most feminine and lovable of cars, the DS-19. When I was living in France (1958) they were the latest, wonderful thing. And HOW I wanted one. But by the time I could afford one, they had been replaced by boring Citroens just like any other car... Lucky you!

I'M IN LOVE WITH MY CAR (Taylor)
(Dedicated to Johnathan Harris, boy racer to the end)
The machine of a dream Such a clean machine With the pistons a pumping And the hubcaps all gleam
When I'm holding your wheel All I hear is your gear When my hand's on your grease gun Oh it's like a disease son
I'm in love with my car Gotta feel for my automobile Get a grip on my boy racer rollbar Such a thrill when your radials squeal
Told my girl I'd have to forget her Rather buy me a new carburettor So she made tracks saying this is the end now Cars don't talk back They're just four wheeled friends now
When I'm holding your wheel All I hear is your gear When I'm cruising in overdrive Don't have to listen to no run of the mill talk jive
I'm in love with my car Gotta feel for my automobile I'm in love with my car String back gloves in my automolove!

Oh yes! Im in love with her too - drove the DS5 and Pallas for 15 years! Great image Hugo - the fairly smooth light-lines and the sharpness of the dash is testimony of the smooth ride of these old cars (or is it the smooth highway aor both?). The slight movement in your hands and the steering wheel shows that you were actually driving. The composition is strong with just enough light from other cars to fill in the background and create the sense of motion. Oh, and yes - that feather is great! Regards. Joggie

What's all this rubbish about "original"...how pretentious can people get..! For you, old Hugo, it is an original.
I think it is yet another great snapshot of your life which as a photographer is always of interest to see how others tick...seeing all your knick knacks ie keyring, air-freshener. We all have our own "cave" as a car.
If you cropped the top a little more it really would look like an old computer game....fab....see insert
Well done, my friend Hugo

Hello Hugo!
Maybe it is not so creative... I desagree! :) It is very creative, at least demands a lot of creative thinking. And this shot is really interesting.
It makes me to remember a very old computer game: Bill Elliot's Nascar. Amiga one...
Nothing better than a great car, a big road and Queen on the tape:
... One flesh one bone, One true religion, One voice one hope, One real decision, Wowowowowowo
I had a dream, When I was young, A dream of sweet illusion, A glimpse of hope and unity, And visions of one sweet union, But a cold wind blows, And a dark rain falls, And in my heart it shows, Look what they've done to my dream
Vision, Give me your hands, Give me your hearts, I'm ready, There's only one direction, One world and one nation, Yeah one vision
Ah! One last thing. I guess you are getting comic on your abouts. I like that!
Cheers, Renato
