Hi John, I'm no expert on lenses and not having tested any others, I decided on this one purely by recommendations from Professional photographers saying it was a useful range and delivered good images. It's very easy to use and when you get it right it's great. It is heavy, but any quality lens of this focal length will be, it's also expensive and I believe that Sigma make an equivalent for half the price 80 - 400mm OS APO lense so that might be worth a look.I've generally found Sigma very good.

Hi John, I've used a Sigma 170-500mm, it produced lovely sharp images but was difficult to use it had no image stabilisation so I bought the Canon lens and have REALLY enjoyed using it. Truly flexible and a great range, the IS gives me 3 extra stops which unfortunately I need! I would suggest you have a look at the equivalent Sigma lens which also has Optical stabilisation at half the price.
