About I loved the quiet beauty of this sunset. There is a wonderful concept that there is healing in beauty. This night, that was felt. (The little dot near the far shore is someone fishing.) I wonder though, if there is too much pink. This is exactly what I saw and it was a beautiful sight with the clouds reflecting in the water as they did. What do you think?

It's wonderfull...you think that is NOT WATER but ICE! You think that you can walk on it, and I'm dreamming how that looks like to be in reality...to feal the emptiness of the space infrond of you, that magic moment that can makes you erase eny kind of madness, any kind of bad thoughs, a dream for me, that I think Mary, it's magic!

I don´t think there is too much pink, Mary - I´ve witnessed similar scenes. Stunning colours ... and a wonderful pattern created by the sky, landscape and reflections.

Antonia, thank you so very much for the info. I figured there was something in PS that would do it, I just wasn't sure where. This will save me some time. I appreciate the lesson. Take good cre.

Hi Mary, there is a measure tool in Photoshop located under the eyedropper in the toolbar. Select it, click at your beginning and ending point on your horizon. Next on the menu bar click Image/rotate canvas/arbitrary. The degrees to correct your vertical/horizontal are automatically set for you when you arrive. Just click OK and the canvas will adjust your horizon line automatically to perfect. All that is left is to crop out the messed up border.

Mary Brown   {K:71879} 9/24/2006
Hi Antonia. You may well be right about the horizon. I seem to have a hard time staightening horizons. There is probably an easy way than my guessing method and sometimes, I don't get it just right.

Hi Mary,
I think there is healiing in beauty altho I never heard it expressed this way before. When I think about it I've heard it in many ways that add up to this...

I also think that if this is exactly what you saw then there is definitely not too much pink in your sunset.

I also think that the clouds and reflections and shadows that You saw and were able to share with us, is a gift.

This is beautiful and I thank you for sharing it with us.

Best Wishes,
Michele~

I'm blown away by the colors in this, especially as you said that it is exactly what you so. They are so dramatic, I expected you to tell us that there was Photoshop magic involved. Beautiful. This is perfect for the project. It isn't too pink for my taste. The horizon line seems tipped just a smidge, but that may well be my eyes. Antonia

Yeah, retractable lenses complicate matters. For my film camera I have two different filter systems (two different sizes). Mostly I use the large one (I bought the entire small set at a garage sale for next to nothing). It's the Cokin system:

http://www.cokin.co.uk/pages/main.htm

Like your friend, I could hold these in front of my camera, but I don't. Raquel (here) told me she inserts her lens into a the back of a macro lens she has and suggested I try the same. Why not?

Mary Brown   {K:71879} 9/13/2006
Hi James, it's me again. Re filters: my camera has a retractable lens, but I was able to find a lens adaptor that allows certain size lenses to be used. However, on a quick look, I didn't see any kits that fit your specific DS550. This summer, I spent a couple of hours with a photographer. His polarizer and ND filters do not attach to his cameras. He always uses a ripod and holds his filters in from. He suggested buying the largesr polarizing filter one can. That way it will be useful for just about any camera, no matter how many you have or how ofter you change. He does the same for his ND filter. My polarizer attaches just to mine, so when I upgrade, I'll have to get another one, so I think, at that time, I'll probably go with his suggestion.

Thanks, Roger. You are right--it is what it is and this sunset was a beautiful one to have the pleasure of viewing. Pink does not happen too often here and I love it when it does. I am pleased to have got this picture of it.

My digital has a retractible lens so I can't use filters (well, I could hold filters in front of the lens). A polarizer will increase color saturation, as a general rule, by lengthening exposure time per f-stop. It will have other effects as well. Reflections will be changed (so the surface of the lake could be different. Another good way to increase color saturation is with a neutral density filter (looks pretty much gray). Of course, your eye is the critical element and that seems to be working just fine. See you.

Mary Brown   {K:71879} 9/11/2006
Hi James. Mine is a digital camera, but I do have a polarizer filter. have not used it much. Iguess I had better get in the habit of bringing it with me when grab my camera to go to th beach to wath the sunset. Alas, not too many sunsets at the lke left for this season. The next time we o there is to close down for the season. Thanks forthe sggestion.

Beautiful colors. You said it is as you saw it so that is how it should be shown. Too often in our photography I think we try to improve on what we actually see. I think it is beautiful. Del.

James Cook James Cook   {K:38068} 9/11/2006
If your camera takes filters, I would recommend using a polarizer for shots where color saturation is key. This is a great shot, to be sure, but a polarizer can enrich the depth of each color. I almost always shoot with one on (well, on my film camera--my current digital won't take filters).

Mary Brown   {K:71879} 9/11/2006
Hi James. Thanks for your comment. No, I did not use any filters. Fom my camera, I straightened the horizon and cropped a bit that's all. These are colours that I see usually only once, or maybe twice, a summer. Pink is not the general sunet colour. Howeer, it is glorius when it happens.

wow. It'so natural but at the same time so unreal: we know that mother nature can gave us similar show but we also forget it!
Real precious moment, and no, there's no too much pink in my opinion.

If it is what you saw, how could there be "too much" anything? It is what it is, and it is we who are brought into question by our reactions to it. I think it's just beautiful. I hope your daughter finds all the healing there is in such beauty!
