Thanks, Tim and Scott. The last four pics that I posted are from Nootka trail, which is on a separate island, north of Long Beach and well south of Cape Scott. There is a new book out in bookstores of the island that describes many of the hikes along the west coast of Vancouver Island, including Nootka. I found a google search was the best method of getting info on that hike, with day by day advice. The float-plane service have a little guidebook worth about $6.50. You fly in from Gold River, take the Uchuk ferry out from Friendly Cove about 6 days later. You need to prebook both, well in advance. It's a little expensive mainly because of the float plane.

My brother logs there, and he tells me that he rarely sets foot on solid ground, because of the huge amount of deadfall (cedar seems to last forever without decay). Expect to crawl over/under/around thousands of huge logs -- not so easy in the mud with a big pack. Expect the going to be a lot slower than on the West Coast Trail, as there are very few chainsaw paths and no boardwalks. You don't need a GPS, the trail is well marked but you are in thick bush for most of it. I could tell you more about it if you want, just remove 'panties' from my email address listed here. Cheers.

Hey that's great you made it to the Nootka trail. I am keen to give that one a go real soon myself. Some amazing formations throughout that hike.
