No worries Dave, I wasn't offended, but rather saw it as an opportunity to vocalise my feelings on the rule of thirds.

I centred the picture on the crew member in the door, as I saw him as the prominent subject of the shot.

All the best,
Ed

Sorry Edward, I didn't mean to offend you. The door is slightly off center and I just thought it might look a little better even more so. It was just a suggestion.

Best wishes and no offense intended,
Dave

Thank you for your comment Dave.

My only question is why you feel the centred crop deserves a criticism? I wouldn't crop a little off the left so as to displace the doorway a little farther off centre, because I cropped it so that the doorway was centred on purpose in the first place.

To paraphrase a comment I made on one of Ron's images: Just a little curious why you chose to leave so much empty space above the subject or am I the only anti-rule of thirds rebel out there?

I'll cut and paste a comment from Ron Wilson on another of my images and my response to him http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1180650:

Comment from Ron Wilson: Your shots are awesome Edward. Since your image is so huge to begin with you can get away with putting it in the centre of the frame. Rule of thirds not withstanding.

My response to the above comment: I must admit I never really understood the benefit of the rule of thirds; I have always preferred to centre the subject regardless of size, background or subordinate subjects. Maybe I'll start a "rule of centre" revolution, call it the "Edward's Rule".

Perhaps this will spark an interesting debate or more likely I will be bombarded by pro-thirds advocates. Maybe it comes from not having any training or photography courses, but until someone can truly convince me of the benefit of the rule of thirds, I will continue to centre my shots...on purpose.

All the best,
Ed

Excellent close-in shot that really captures that military might. The only citicism I would have is to crop a little off the left so as to displace the doorway a little farther off center.

Best wishes,
Dave
