A challenge! I do NOT consider myself an expert and you may get a lot better responses to come. However, here's a try from an intermediate.
You do have some detail left in the blown-out areas and I was able to bring that back. I use photoshop CS. First I got rid of your frame to make it simpler. Then I made a mask using color range to work on just the blown-out areas. I expanded by 2 pixels and then feathered the mask by 4 pixels. Then with the mask selected I created a curves layer and pulled the line downward just in the highlight area. I selected "multiply" for the layer mode to try and darken. Then I created a levels layer above that, added as a clipping mask again in multiply mode, to just work on the highlights. Finally I added a hue/saturation layer to emphasize the orange colors. Can't say I'm very happy with the final result. The yellow fungus on the one pumpkin looks unusual, and the pic is oversharpened with too much oversharpening artefact along edges. But, that's what I came up with in a few minutes. Any other ideas?
