Location City -  Deadvlei, Sossusvlei
State -  SOUTHERN NAMIBIA
Country - Namibia   Namibia
About The fallen remains of a camelthorn tree on the floor of the deadvlei pan, Sossusvlei, Namibia. Taken about 5 minutes before sunrise.

This part of Sossusvlei, according to scientific theory was cut off by moving (windblown) sanddunes from the rest of Sossusvlei about 900 years ago. The big camelthorn trees was approximately 600 - 700 years of age at that stage. Cut off from the regular water supply of the main wetland the trees all died. Due to the lack of moisture and the extreme temparatures the hardwood cores of the big trees were preserved and many of them are still standing - skeletons of their former glory though. I spent a whole day from before sunrise until late afternoon in this magical place - it was like stepping back into time. While taking photos of the many shapes and textures, I was trying to see this place as it was 900 years ago. Every here and there, along the edges and bottomslopes of the dunes, the water of the extraordinary rainy season of 2006 brought some bright green growth - small pieces of evidence of the former glory of this place! I stood in awe and did not want to go. One sure thing - I'm going back!

Stunning, this place is something else again, please show us more. Worth travelling to Namibia just to visit this part of Sossusvlei.

Regards
Peter.

I hope to catch up with your fine images this evening, Joggie! As you say, "it is great in all respects." :-) The terrain is so beautifully surreal and quite a contrast to what I am accustomed to - which makes for quite a treat! I can imagine how one could feel a sense of timelessness here.

Joggie...
You were in the beautiful place... These trees look like hurt and desperate dancers... Colours of sand from sand dunes and remains of grass are exceptional. Okay, you are providing documentation for this place before completely changes...
Warm regards:)

The feelings before pressing the button and the vision of the photographer let understand and enjoy his photo much more. Lights and colours just before sunset are beautiful, the black on the trees shows the time of their death.
Thanks Joggie for the very interesting informations.
Take care.
