Actually, I think the fact that the face is hidden ads a lot to your intention of picturing the wind.. Andre is right with the lack of detail in the hair but very difficult under such conditions.
Glad the wind didn't blow you away.

Full of life and character- and again portrayed without a face- marvellous! The capture of the hand conveys much- so beautifully individual and unique.

Yeah, that can be tough. Ya gotta get her to flip her head around a lot and shoot on continuous. A little luck and a lot of frames, you'll get your shot.

Thanks Joel. Times when I can actually capture an image exactly as I'd imagined are rare for me. In my mind, I saw a faceless portrait, with hair blowing wildly and I saw the whole atmosphere being dreamlike. With that idea in mind, I set out to nail it. However, I completely underestimated it from a viewers perspective, and so I understand now, how important it would be for an outsider to see a face here.
Wonderful to get your perspective on this too Joel. I appreciated immensely. Thanks again :)

Rina,
This is beautiful!
yeah, you miss seeing her face, but I have to say, that it has a playful tease to the image with her expression hidden. It could be any mood that you want it to be.. know what I mean? The wind is the strongest factor in the image, and your choice of composition, and crop show it off very well.
You should be very proud of this, and where you placed. the colors, and contrast is very nice....dreamy!
For me, the most amazing technical aspect is the exposure of her white clothes against the white of the ocean. very good job with getting the depth there!
I like it very much! cheers Rina, -Joel

Hello my sweet angel and sexy OzzieKiwi.....my busy week at work has finished and leaves me free to catch up on my musts, needs and wants lists:)
I am pleased that your entry moved higher up the list in this challenge. I have read the comment from Andre and your reply. I always find it difficult to strike a balance with dark haired people and the highlights that accompany the shots they are in and I cannot imagine that you could have done any better with Ally's hair. Well done to you sweetie and I hope to hear news of top tens, thirds, seconds and shed loads of firsts. My very best wishes to you as always along with a king sized hug.....catch...XXX...Ray;)

Well most has been said already . . . so I'll mention my thought that elevating that right arm and allowing the flowing cloth to billow in the breeze obstructing perhaps the lower third of her face (which of course should be facing you at an oblique angle)- close in and crop everything below . . . say the necklace . . . and wooooo hoooo (here's that 20/20 hindsight again) . . . you'd have moved up 20 or 30 errrrrr...... 35 or 45 places (had to pass Andre's estimate)! Great idea to enter all these challenges! Go get 'em! :)
Regards, Doyle I <~~~~~

Great story Andre. Hey, at least you won something tangible for your effort! One day I'll crack a high placing. Though, a few months back, I made it all the way up to 13th place for A Single Tree challenge shot which I manipulated in PS to produce a sunset sky colour that wasn't even in the original. Go figure! Maybe I ought to stick to landscapes... :)

Hi Rina, Yeah, I guess that is a bit tricky because in this case you really want the rest of the wind-swept shawl and dress in the image. I think you got the shot you intended.
I'm not sure how you handle the challenge of entering images in such sizes. I've entered a few and I recall them all allowing larger submissions. Some even insisting that you have a much larger size in case they want to reproduce it. Funny story.. I entered my Tundra Swan image (editors choice award here on Usefilm) in one of the Canadian Wildlife Federation monthly contests. It ended up winning second place for the month. They didn't even notify me by email. A small package arrived in the mail a few months later with a bag of goodies from the CWF (hat, t'shirt, various other little trinkets) By this time I had forgotten that I entered the contest. My wife asked me why I ordered all that junk from them. :) I said I didn't order anything. Then I remembered... I went to their site and sure enough there is a picture of my swan up for the month of May. The image is about 2X2 on the screen, after they wanted a huge file sent to them. :) Andre

Totally agree. Thing is, with these challenges, we're expected to submit an image 640px max @ 150kb. Keeping as much image detail under those restrictions, is an enormous task. So I guess I'll have to start rethinking how I shoot in terms of how close I am to the subject. The further away, the more fine detail I'll lose on resize. A closer crop would have seen those details in the hair, as you say, that are completely lost here. I have some other shots I took during that session (with face), that I'll get around to posting at some point.
As always Andre, you're feedback is an immense help to me. Thank you :)

Hi Rina, I think you are dead on with your assessment of the fact that her face was not shown much in this one being the biggest drawback to a higher placing. There is also another significant problem with this one. Her hair does not have a great amount of detail in it. (at least I can't make out a lot on my monitor... this may not be the case in the print or for someone with a better graphics card than I have) On my monitor I see everything else in the image very well and it all looks great! The mass of hair except for the wind blown fringes seems very monotoned and detail-less. My betting is that if you had the same shot with really nice detail in the hair and approximately 1/3 of the important facial features showing, you would have jumped up at least 20 or 30 places... if not more. I have a feeling you already know this. But hind sight is always 20/20 :) Andre
