Hi Annemette,
We were very lucky indeed. Morgan was able to walk up and down stairs for all but the last month of his life. It was eventually a major stroke that got to him. :(
I couldn't bring myself to get another dog right away. Now that over ten years have passed by, every time we see a Bouvier, we feel like getting another. Then we think twice about the committment and put it off again. Maybe someday. :)

Dear Andre
Thanks for sharing the photo and story of Morgan! Indeed a beautiful dog - they always look graciuos in a funny way because of the ears. I knew it was a herddog(Belgian?), but I didnīt know that they werenīt crazy about strangers.
Little Henry as I call my dog on 80 kg;-) is very gentle with strangers, but he does get protective if someone comes to the door without making a sound and such. As a packmember most dogs protect the family, but of course some are more alert than others depending on the breed and training.
Wonderful and lucky for you to have had Morgan for fourteen years without hipproblems and similar conditions with the bones. Large breeds do have a tendency to get weak in their hips when getting old even though they might not have hipdysplasia (I donīt know how you name it in English:-)) and even though they have been fed in a proper way without too much proteines. Henry is starting to have some problems with his one backleg and is getting medication for as long as he responds well to it.
Are you going to have another bouvier in the family?:-)
Best wishes
Annemette

Hi Annemette,
Yes, that's the breed. Great dogs! Our dog (Morgan) had a wonderfully long life for a large Bouvier. We were told to expect possible hip problems at around the 8 to 9 year mark. Our vet looked after him from the time he was a puppy right to the end. He was always amazed at how healthy Morgan was and told us he had never seen one quite like him.
He had the ears clipped similar to the way they do Dobermans. Also the "Bob" tail. I think it is not in fashion or politically correct to do that as much these days. Bouviers can be extremely intimedating to people that don't know them. They are herd dogs that are often used as guards. They will protect you and your family with their life.
I hope you have the same kind of good luck with your Newfoundland as we did with our Bouvier.

Here is a shot of Morgan taken in his prime.

You and your family have a great New Year!

A bouvier flandres with the long coat and ears standing up in the air? Iīve always been fascinated by this breed although not knowing it very much. How fortunate to have it for fourteen years! My newfoundland will be seven this summer, so heīs already getting old although the American variant(that he is) gets mature later than the continental one and also lives for longer. Yes, the large breeds are indeed wonderful with children:-)
THank you very much for commenting and enjoy the year that weīve stepped into.
Best wishes
Annemette

This one brings back some memories for me Annemette. I know this is a Newfoundland, but we had a large male Bouvier in the family for 14 years. It seems the larger the dog, the better they are with kids :)

Thanks a lot, Ana:-) Well in Denmark youīre not allowed to walk your dog without having a leash on it which is also good because there are many people who are afraid of dogs and even more so such a big dog although heīs so gentle.
Take care,
Annemette
