Hello Jan,

Excellent portrait. I like the DOF running from unsharp in front to sharp at the subject. The expression and moment are also very nice choices.
Interesting image of "photograpy at work". The choice of colours is also perfect. I like your portfolio a lot, you have many interests and create very nice work. Compliments !

Friendly greetz,
Albert Jacobs :)

Doyle -- Used to have one myself back in the 60's and loved the "H" in spite of a few mechanical quirks here and there. Wish I had not sold it.
As for Joel, you never see him without some kind of optical recording device. Good thing my daughter is not jealous. :)
Thanks for your kind comments... BTW-- I did try this in B&W and appreciate the example. I did not like it as much as the original and instead desaturated it slightly, which is the one I posted. It is all a matter of degree but I did not go as far on the desaturation as your example. I just toned it down a bit. I almost always try several variations like this since looking at your work. You have opened my eyes on this topic of B&W and desat.
--Best regards, Jan

(He does great work too - everybody should check it out)! :) Rare he's not dealing with a camera?? Hmmmmm . . . . he sounds like ME!! Great perspective and it DOES sing in B&W too! Cool!

John - thanks again for a wonderful critique. The lace table cloth runner did work out well for establishing depth and for bringing the eye to the camera and Joel. I wanted the camera to be the primary focus target because when it comes to Joel the camera is his eye; it is all about him; one and the same. The background was sharper than I would have liked it so I used Photoshop to blur the background a bit. I desaturated the colors slightly but in this case I did not go all the way and make it a toned B&W. In hindsight that might have been a better approach to remove the distraction of any color.
--Warmest regards and thanks, Jan

Excellent way, a strong element here about that.....fabric (?) that gives the way to the watcher's eyes....yea all at that camera and of caurse at the person. I like a lot the sharpness on the camera and at the same time the soft blurness on him, that gives your 'target' here, your subject! Everything else on the background does not mater, strongly blur, very good too. hmmmmm....I try to see that in sepia or greyscale, I think it could be better like that, isn't it? Works with that piece of art....speaking about that GREAT camera.
Best regards!

Thank you pops!!!!
This is an aweesome perspective image! I love the drawn focus to the Hassy.

Great tones on this one as well. The brisk contrast of the camera against the warmth of the house works very well! Very nice DoF enhancement for the classic look!

well done pops... nice subject too ;)

thanks for the shout out, and the cred on my load speed for the Hasselblad.. i'm getting faster, but fear the day when I see the roll bounce to the ground as a paper and film party streamer.

'little puppy' is right.
After shooting with the 17-85 all the time, my 20D looks funny when I put on my nifty 50.

Thanks, Paul. We were having fun and it is a rare moment when Joel is not carrying, holding, fiddling with one of his cameras.
Happy Holidays to you, Jan
PS: Every time I pull out the 50 mm Canon lens you recommended to me I think of you! If it had not been for your help I would never have purchased that little puppy.

This shot has a very creative perspective.
Ive an idea ,give it a try,you may like it.
Try to make close to B/W,So, eyes can better forcuse on the person.
In this shot the background colors are a little bit distracting.

I love this shot anyway.

Good luck
Ardalan.
6+ for your fantastic framing.

I was just reading Joel's wonderful commentary on his photo of YOU, Jan. This is really enjoyable 'looking in the mirror looking back' stuff.

Merry Christmas to ALL of you!!
