Hi Todd,
Thanks for your comment and for your observation.
These guys usually go for the already open clamshells. There is not way that they can crack open those tough shells with such a weak bill.
I have seen other birds like the Barrow’s Golden Eye and the Common Golden Eye, swallowing the whole shells.
It looks painful, but they are perfectly capable to digest them.
