Very nice colours and composition, interestingly the loon's eye has a reflection in it and kind of look like it's glowing in the reflection in the water.
(I was going to write, now if only we had $1 for every time we saw a loon... )

Thanks Ina for your comments. I have a lot of opportunities to capture loons as we live on the lake and we are often out on the water. There are a lot of loons around the lake. I usually take my camera when we go boating.

Awesome loon capture, Joe! They're not easy to photograph, in my experience they dive a lot, and you never know when and where they'll resurface :) Wonderfully sharp with great eye & feather definition, and great reflection! Perfect for printing and framing :) Ina

This is a beautiful shot of the Loon (I understand they're called Divers in the UK) . . . and this bird is anything but common. I've always loved the sounds of lake loons -
Your reflections and the surface texture of the water are very well represented here . . . accenting this bird very nicely - especially with that wake. The dagger beak and red eye are nicely focused and are the key to the composition (IMO) . . . Well, they're the key in my opinion to most animal compositions anyway (there are exceptions). Nice entry for the spotlight project Joe.
I think you might well do better than the GRAY in the framing where your title and signature area. If you're interested - the BG color here at UF is #F3F3F3 . . . an off white. If you use that . . . it will disappear - this is a technique I have used on my recent uploads to pull the text off of the image and place it on the UF page . . . though really, they're still connected. Just a thought.
