Joe, thanks for your demonstration. I agree "opening it up" adds needed punch. However, I was striving to get the dreary look of the impending storm. I may not have worked well as an image. I have reposted a version which may be more to your liking. Please have a look. Eb

I like the greenish tinge. But I 'opened it up' a bit, just for comparison, here:

Ron, thanks for your detailed analysis! Your idea for masking in sky is a good one but not a gain in this case. The original sky is actually that grey and the individual exposures reflect that - the photomatix rendered sky is as good as it gets. I agree that the "snow" sky is a bit of a problem and particularily the tonal accentuation along the tree line on the right. That could be fixed in a number of ways. Eb

Very nice work, Eb. I do like the HDR processing in this one a bit more than the original. To me it looks like the original is just a bit on the bluish side so I like the more gray or "natural" appearance of this one. Nice to see you finally have some snow there!! Cheers, Gary

Love the detail Eb, the hdr process doesn't do this shot justice in the sky though. Anymore tweaking and you will just get a grayer sky. I think some masking and adjustments to the sky are would be beneficial. I have found that after using photmatrix I take one or two of the original files and layer in areas that I am not happy with. It is not a time saving process but you do get some great detail lifts in otherwise dark areas. Regards Ron.

Nice capture of this snowy scene, Eb, and I like the low cloud hanging over the upslope. The exposure looks good in all areas, too, probably the result of you HDR work. Dave.

Eb, HDR processing artifacts above trees in right side of image is my only complain. Maybe touch of blue tint in sky also? Composition, detail are good. Landscape is astonishing!

I am still learning to understand where there is advantage of using HDR. I am posting an image rendered from a single exposure, with a fair bit of manipulation to balance the tones. As far as I can see, there is not the same subtlety of detail, nor mood. Why I took multiple exposures with the intent of rendering into HDR was to retain the detail and mood in the sky. It takes about EV-2 to hold sky detail. Eb
