Hi Hugo,
I have been away in Argentina for a month so I am glad to come back and see what you have been up to. The Hassy looks like it is performing great...I see lots of them in the Photo stores now, used and for sale...Cheap....guess the digital world is really taking it's toll on all the great film cameras. So i am happy to see you bringing attention to the fantastic quality of these past generation Film cameras....Now that they are at such an accessible price I am thinking of trying them out. your images are fantastic as i would have expected. The stream of light leaving the image is an just an extra bonus that makes it just that much more fascinating. Thanks for the inspiration! Cheers, Tim

I find this composition very attractive in its rather industrial and mechanical look. The amount of such details under this light is great! Perhaps getting some more of the ship using a wider angle could help make it smell even stronger after the harbour?
Best wishes,
Nick

Hi Hugo, Your time exposures have created a really exceptional look to these two images. The detail is lovely throughout the image. As good as this one looks, I can't help thinking I would also like to see a B&W version of it. The reason being that I've been watching a DVD box set of old Alfred Hitchcock films from the 1930s. In these old films, he uses many of the same elements you have in this image. The shadows created by the stairway seem very much like right out of a Hitchcock movie. Andre

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the feedback; yes it was a paying gig, but I think - with all things going on, and the type of composition, it fits, but that's obviously the subjective part of photography. Guess the tail lights of the car don't add enough to spice up the image?
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Ursula,
It's good to be back after a while.... There is a lot of movement going on, but mostly goes fully automated. With exception of the driver of the car of which you see the red tail lights....;)

Hugo

Hi Shane,
I really appreciate your description, as well as AJ's reply to it - it's always nice to notice different people look at things differently.... I also took an almost identical shot, using the white road paint as leading line through the center, but it - no surprises there - makes the image more static, failing to include the peripherals into the composition.
Cheers,
Hugo

Shane, I like your analysis of this image, and hadn't seen it quite like that myself. I guess if the red lights of the vehicle were just a little closer, they would have linked the gangplank on the left to the steps on the right in my eyes without having to be prompted by your comment!

Hi AJ,
Those huge cranes sure are fascinating, aren't they?
We - another photographer and myself - made an appointment, and were driven around by the terminals' security, which is essentially the only way to get this close....:)
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Marti,
Thanks for your comment; the seemingly peaceful and tranquil feel absolutely wasdeceiving, the overhead cranes hauled the containers at a fairly rapid pace.

Hi Hugo - Great image as usual. Your use of a one minute exposure practically wiped out any traces of humans very effectively - what is left is the dominating structures of technology which man created - losing his soul in the process? Well done! Joggie (had a hectic 2 months, whisk in and out of UF - need to discuss AE with you)

In fact it seems deserted and abandoned place, but the light gives it as there is still life is going on here, and the red trails showed a "car" just moved. Hearing about Rotterdam port and the movement of commercial this shot does not give justice to the famous port, though super night shot with excellent details. regards Saeed

The lighting and composition here are very nice, but my interest is peaked by two yellow 'trucks' on the right....I'd really love to see a detail of the mechanics of these massive structures. Sal

Having worked in the container industry myself some years ago I can see the attraction of this subject matter. Rotterdam Port is huge so you are spoiled for choice. You don't need to hear from me but this is compositionally suberb. My eye starts off moving down the gang plank from the ship. The light trail from the car takes me nicely accross the road with the help of the white road paint which could even draw an eye into the scene. From there its up the stairs which are that extra bit defined by the strong shadow cast against the metal wall. These stairs also give the image good scale. The beams on the roof are in effect arrows which whisk the eye back to the boat and down the gangplank again. Round and round we go! Good work

Funnily enough, I've been playing around in the container terminal (Algeciras) recently, too, but I decided I would go back at dusk to get some additional lighting effects. Seems like you got there first!
I like the way you have decided to go in close, on this one. It gives lots to look at and try to work out what the bigger picture is like.
Were able just to walk in or did you have to arrange a visit?
