About At this site, 450 Confederate sharpshooters held off 12,000 Union soldiers who were trying to cross this bridge over Antietam Creek. Sharpshooters were positioned behind trees and boulders on a steep wooded bluff about 100 feet above the bridge. Nevertheless, by 1 p.m. the Union forces had taken the bridge and were pushing the Confederate army toward the river, blocking their line of retreat.

General Longstreet (Confederate) is quoted as saying that Lee's entire army could have been captured if the Union had 10,000 fresh troops. Meanwhile, Union General McLellan was holding 20,000 troops in reserve and lost a second opportunity to defeat the entire Confederate army.

The terrible carnage at Antietam might at least have brought about an end to the war, had McLellan acted.

Peace.

I like the composition here. Centering the lone cannon and the information you gave brings the image a step higher than a pleasant country scene. It all looks so peaceful now.

Hi Maryanne, Thanks for your comment on my Over the Falls picture. This is a wonderful picture. I love the detail of the brick face on the bridge. This would make a fantastic picture in the fall when all the leaves are changing colors. Many thanks for the short history lesson I think it's great. Sad to think that at one time this very peaceful looking land was a battleground were many brave young men died. Sometimes when you look at a picture the most important thing is not the picture itself but the story behind it.

Regards, Rainy

Burnside Bridge taken from the Confederate viewpoint on the west side of Antietam Creek. Historic photo taken by Alexander Gardner, an assistant to Matthew Brady, who took 70 photographs of the battlefield starting just two days after the battle.
