hi ya,brat!...this one caught my eye...surely one of your top 3 best fashion shots...the lighting is nice and even with no harsh modeling of her features...skintone is nice, but to my eye a bit on the cool balance (greenish tinge) for olive skin...love the scarf BG,her expression and she is gorgeous...you framed this shot perfectly!...lovely clarity, too

i want to give you a 7,but will lower the score,so here is a virtual 10+ from me!
peace,gayle

No worries, Mark. I don't even look at the ratings. As they say, a word is worth a thousand pictures!

There was some smoothing of her skin, but there was a reflector just off camera left, which is why her chin was pointed in that direction.

Paul -- Excellent portrait; I have no idea how much post processing you did here but it looks like the light is sculpting her facial features. Stunning.

Well, thanks!
What is that 'tiny thing' ?

...I still don't understand how a 7 knocks down a 6.3 to a 6.1. Al or Phil will hopefully explain that someday...(even though I've already asked in the past, whatever....) Never mind the alice in wonderland rating system, still a great shot, Mark

Martin,
The top Usefilm menu has a drop-down to Photo Forums. Go to the first selection > Photo Forums > Photography Help forum.

Near the top of the page is a link to 'Start new discussion'. Give it a subject heading of 'Canon 580EX Help' and away we go!!

Paul,

Alrighty then, just tell this ol' country boy what to do. I have never done anything like this in the past...

Even better, start a discussion in the Usefilm Donors Only forum about this, and I can answer your questions there!

Paul,

Ok, I got it... ;) I love to break the rules every chance I get, as well...

At any rate I'm going to email you with a couple of questions about the 580EX, because you seem to have a better understanding of this thing... I love my Bees, but I really don't think much of the speed flash for what I paid for it.

It's probably just operator error, but maybe you can solve that concern for me?

Thanks for the insight,

Martin

Yeah, I was breaking several rules at the same time.

Ok. Here's the method to my madness, Martin (some of which cannot be deduced from the final image).

I'm shooting Christinna with a dilapidated barn behind her. I pushed it to a small aperture to maintain some detail in the barn.

The final part, 1/250th shutter, is that I was using my 580EX, and my 20D just sets to 1/250 when synch'd with the flash. I didn't want the flash to separate her, but mildly lighten her and give a twinkle in her eye.

So far, so good.
Then, Chris extends her arms with the bright scarf up behind her. Barn, for that second, becomes irelevant and I fire off about 5 versions.

:)

Thanks for the tips, though.

Paul,

It's just ISO 800 is very forgiving with your camera and lens... And if wasn't windy outside I would have cut the shutter speed to 1/125 with a gain to use a ISO of 400, then I would have stopped down the f/stop to f/ 8, or less for a portrait giving you a ISO of 200... Which would help regarding the post process time using PS down to a minimum... ;)

Yes, Martin, those are the shoot specs; why?

Martin . Martin .   {K:24957} 6/11/2007
Paul,

I love this 1 my friend, but are the spec's correct?

Well done indeed,

Martin
