About The Antelope House ruins at Canyon de Chelly. The ruins get its name from the Antelope Petroglyphs on the cliff wall. Look just above the house and you will see one of the signs made by the Anasazi.

Thank you, Annemette... the "swastika" is actually an old Navajo symbol, here's an explanation:

"Whirling Logs, an ancient symbol from many cultures, the North American symbol depicted the cyclic motion of life, seasons and the four winds. Taken from the image of a tree in a whirlwind, this image is found in Navajo sand paintings frequently. It is considered a powerful medicine."

For the effects, I pretty much used the techniques described in this PS tutorial:

http://www.graphics.com/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=364

That site has a bunch of various tutorials.

Best wishes,
Dave

Dave Arnold Dave Arnold   {K:55680} 7/6/2007
Thanks, John. I don't think anybody really knows how old the various ruins are. I was reading some things while there and they were basically estimating ages. The Canyon was occupied by cliff dwellers from about 2500 B.C. on.

The latest inhabitants for the most part seem to have left by 1300 A.D. But this particular ruin was apparently occupied until the early 1800s, where a Navajo by the name of Little Sheep drew the Petroglyph's on the cliff wall.
