And just to give you an idea of the change in this with tone mapping, I took a whole two minutes and ran it through photomatix. Mind you, there are several further adjustments I could have made, but I'll let you play with that.
I brightened your photo twice and left the original photo as the darkest input....
Hope you don't mind, just wanted to see what the possibilities are.

No problem, John. I know (but haven't tried this yet) you can get excellent results from a single photo shot in RAW and making adjustments to the brightness before tone mapping. But I have not yet shot raw. So I have experimented doing the same thing with existing jpgs. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Ummm, thanks for the idea Dave, that's a good one! Schooled in "traditional" techniques, my biggest challenge, I find, is carrying my creative side outside "the box"! Good to have you around my friend! Best regards, John

Very nice composition, John. Would look great as an HDR processed shot as well. You might give it a go, using the existing shot. Make a copy with washed out, another copy a little darker and see how they come out. Tricky but can be done.
