About The boat is named Sunrise ..and this is the small harbor in Depoe Bay.. one of the smallest working harbors in the world ... there is a very , very narrow passage from the harbor to the sea - very dangerous too....

Thank You for your comment and you are right about Doyle -- He is full of information and shares it - which I appreciate soooo much only I don't have the tools to do what He can do - (I'd like it better if I didn't need them) BUT every now & then it would be fun to play around more than I do ....
Thank You for your tip as well my friend .
Best wishes,
Michele~

Great 'save' by Doyle,I think a 'Haze'filter is essential in those conditions Michele.Goes to show the benefits of
digital manipulation excellence[don`t include me in that list]

Dear Michele!

So glad you're not getting discouraged. We all get these shots from time to time and, to be honest, we get those we KNOW aren't up to snuff but love 'em anyway!

Here's the thing. Your shot is soft, probably due to movement on your part. Try upping the shutter speed a tad to get a more forgiving shot . . . ESPECIALLY on scenery shots!! While a tad soft . . . the problem is, I think, you being limited by what your programs can do. The attached was done using CaptureNX (a free, temporarily, download from Nikon). Most of the issues in this shot were from you trying to fix it in editing and with tools not quite good enough. It's a nice shot . . . but you haven't what you need to save it. AND . . . I have to be honest with you . . . the softness issue can only be resolved at the time the shot is taken! ANYWAY . . . I STILL think you have the "eye" and that's something MOST important. (Pssssst. E-mail me the shots if you don't wanna post 'em in comments . . . I believe you have MY address!). --Sounds like Dave's scared of you . . . don't growl at him to much . . . he's actually ok. ;)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Hi Helpful Doyle !
I love to get help and I do need it ..First I still know that I
neeeeeed 'Elemets' soooooo bad, since I am still using picassa, and 'FhotoFilter' and this particular image is one of my worst ever ..I did not have even good clarity, plus it was foggy AND misty ..and dark. I am embarrased to show you what the original looks like.. - as it's one of my worst soooooo I was not surprised to hear any helpful critiques. ..I will send it to you and only if you have the time and know that I will maybe get a new computer this week and get the better post processing tools PLUS not post such a poor quality image -lol!!!

BTW did you ever get time to play with the last image I sent of 'The Bay' ? When ever You do I would be anxious to see it ..but I know You are a very busy guy and have many places to be & things to do sooooo if you didn't get time -- then 'no worries' :))

PS. You are Very Helpful - as is Dave- I'd rather be told what is wrong than just 'nice shot' and I go around thinking I did a good job -ha!!!
Take care my friend and hold onto your seat & put your sun-glasses on cause I am embarrased at how badly this image is straight out of the camera :((
Best Regards,
Grasshopper

Hi Michele, Very nice point os view but I do agree with Dave about the lack of contrast and saturation. I have noticed this in some of your previous photos but I didn't say anything because I am slightly color blind and didn't want to misguide you. BILL NAGY

Well, I feel somewhat vindicated. And relieved. Though, it is interesting how the various people have varying opinions on what the problem might be. I agree with Doyle, your settings seem fine. But then we get into soft versus grainy... I don't know.

My present conclusion is it is just a difference in what one sees in their own monitors. Since I got this new monitor, I have had a few people say my photo is too dark, a couple others say too soft, etc. So it is a whole new learning curve.

Those same photos that received the "too soft" and "too dark" critiques looked fine from where I am sitting. Yet I have noticed when I do the unsharp filter, where I used to unsharp to a level of 2, now at a level of 1 it looks way too sharp...

A great spot to get a shot from Michele. I can see what Dave means here. Monitors are so finicky, but I am sure that you will get it sorted. I can't say that I noticed it( the grain/noise) before, but I have been away for a bit, and have only just started looking in again, so it is useless for me to say anything..I know that your work is always of super quality tho :)
Cheers
Liz

Doyle D. Chastain Doyle D. Chastain   {K:101119} 10/31/2007
Hi Michelle!

Dave's seeing some of what I'm seeing and I think it's likely a minor speedbump in your ongoing quest to improve yourself as a photographer. Sometimes it's issues like these that help us along the way. So what's up here, on this shot? Checking the camera settings so I can give an accurate bit o' advice . . . I see Exposure -0.8; ISO 200; 1/125 sec.; F/8; 55mm. I don't see a problem with the settings here.

Hmmmmm . . . (thinking). Well . . . It is a scenic shot and the composition is pretty good but for a few technical points. I like the ships leading the eye in and I think you've really managed to get an almost instinctive feel for what would be good subjects to shoot and how best to frame them.

The noise or grain is slight but certainly not caused by any ISO issues . . . was this perhaps a foggy day? Misty? I don't think the sharpness is an issue as much as the flat feel so perhaps a slight tinkering with color saturation and contrast . . . particularly midtones might be looked into. It's potentially a good shot . . . but I am curious about what has happened to the image since it was taken . . . it's possible this is post-editing workflow issues but, as I recall, you don't really have editing software (meaning curves and such)?

Let me know what you're processing program is (different programs have different tools) and . . . If you'd like me to take a look at it, you're more than welcome to send me the original image and I can see what I would recommend considering your program and send back a sample of the workflow I used as well as how it affected the image. Just an offer. You know . . . I tries ta' be helpful! :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Ok Martin #2 You have just been reported !!
LOL !! Just kidding around ...Thank You very much for taking the time to tell me this stuff . It's not the first time I have heard my images are a bit grainey so its either my monitor, camera, or Eye's - altho the eye doc says I have very good vision...
My pc is 8 yrs. old soooooo this could have a lot to do with it ..I keep saying I need a new one and that's as far as I get:((

Please don't ever be afraid to give me constructive comments at all Dave...I take them very well- but I do undertstand how hard it can be to say something that could be taken negatively - I just can hardly do it but this is 'why we are all here' right ?

This is the only way to get better IMO so I am really grateful ...and I must say I don't see much difference in your version so this is narrowing it down to my monitor.....

Again I value your honesty and your time to explain ..Ohhhhhhhh woops I was shooting at an ISO of 200 ... does this help any ?

Many Thank YOU's,
Your friend Always ,
Michele~

Good shot Michele, even it looks like needs a bit more clarity and lost some quality on the sharpness perchaps, however it's a very interesting frame my friend ...6
Best regards!

Dave Arnold Dave Arnold   {K:55680} 10/31/2007
Nothing wrong with the view, Michele. But I had asked you what ISO you were shooting on because it seems your photos as of late have been very grainy or noisy. I don't want to be reported as a Martin but at that risk, I just want to critique your photo.

I'm not sure if it is coming out of your camera this way or if it is in the post processing technique you are using. And I understand that what you see on your monitor is not what I see on mine. That being said, understand that I have a new monitor and the differences in what I saw on my old one versus what I see on this new one is quite a surprise.

That could account for me seeing a lot of noise/grain in your recent photos, who knows. Maybe a few others could pipe in here. In any event, if you are doing any post-processing adjustments based on what you are seeing on your screen, you might be doing them a tad too much.

So, just to describe what I see, it appears a tad too light, a little lack of colors and, as stated, noisy/grainy.

I took the liberty of trying to clear some of this up with noise filters/saturation/contrast but I was very quick about it and it may be overdone.

Please don't report me for abuse. I mean no harm.

Dave
