About Scanned from a colour print taken in 1977. Some of the original quality of the colour was missing from this one, so I decided to convert it to a sepia toned image for ease of repair.

Thank you so much Visar!
I suppose our wives and girl friends have no choice but to become relaxed when we continously have a camera in our hands. :)
This is one of my personal favourites from quite a few years ago.

what a capture Andre!!
there is so much of the contemplation of an object unknown, and your wife seems so relaxed from the 'camera complex' that makes the image's entirety the least pretentious; a rather great moment captured with a great taste and old timish touch to it.

regards,
v.

Hi Andre!

And this is why I consider such things like "absolute perfectness" to be both impossible and also unwishable. I guess that too much and too onesided attention to perfection does always the same - it removes the soul from anything.

Out of the many perfectionists among photographers I prefer those who at the same time keep an eye on all the other things that give also some more human touch to the image. Otherwise the possibility for any personal interpretation flies away since the image is only "perfect" and that's all to it. And without a personal interpetation we can't assign a "soul" to anything at all.

All the best,

Nick

Hi Nick,
You summed it up very nicely Nick. Also a good analogy with the music reference. I am not at all a judge of music. I only know what I like. :)
But your explanation is similar to something I've heard before. "If the music is too technically perfect, it doesn't have soul"

That was *the* word I was looking for, Andre! Androids! It's humorous and descriptive at the same time. I guess that some more attention should be drawn back to those more elementary and human things in photography, too. Trying only to impress by using some extraordinary poses and techniques might as well develop to that kind of "untouchable image" that we often see.

An analogy to music again would be some guy like for example Yngwie Malmsteen, who is admitedly brilliant considering technique and skill. But oif you listen to his music... well, something is missing.

I know of course that fashion has to be presented in some kind of "untouchable superiority" considering the models and their photographers. My girlfriend was a fashion model for a long time and one of the reasons why she left that all behind was that they got a new photographer that really made everything so perfect that at the end it was like being an android. (She really told me that using exactly this word some time ago!)

So it seems that while there is surely some level of perfection that is necessary for a good photo, there is also some second level of perfection that steals too much from an image.

Have a nice holiday time!

Nick

Thanks for the really thoughtful comment Nick.
I know exactly what you mean. One of the things about digital photography is that we can really go overboard with a "perfect almost plastic look" when doing portraits. Many of the pro studio portraits are so clean and perfect that the girls tend to look a little like androids, if the photographer is not careful. I don't mean that as a criticizm of glamour images here. Most of the glamour and fashion digital images posted here are first rate.

What a long life story, and I might also assume with all the ups and downs that bring the very own character to everything. Much like the scratches we talked about already, perhaps we also get our scratches as we go.

But the image did come out pretty well, Andre! Even without the strong relation to the image, that you of course must have, it came out very well if you ask me.

It's the kind of image that is more than the sum of its components, because it has that kind of natural look in a good lighting, and is not overloaded with the wish to "look as pretty as possible". Many times that superfluous posing can kill even the most photogenic face, I'm afraid.

Here we have just a moment of a real looking expression, simply captured on a photo, and this gives it that special power that I miss in all "dramatic" poses, which seem so lifeless to me. Perhaps also this is the reason why images like this one have also some of the character of a documentary? Documentary of a life - could we say that?

Thanks very much for the nice comment Nick.

This is one of my favourites of my wife from a number of years ago now. I took this one probably the first winter we moved into our house. We are still here today with two boys, one 28 the other 23.
I also like the fact that she is not looking directly into the camera. I think that goes a long way to creating a fairly natural, unposed look. Winter light can be good or bad I suppose. This image was from a scanned colour image that had a bit of fade and damage to it, so considering the circumstances, I think it came out pretty well.

Thanks Parehan,
You picked the exact same features that I have always liked about this image. I always liked the way the simple snow background worked with the profile.

Very interesting composition with an undoubtfully "old" looking character but still with some more "modern" elements, like for example the fact that the portrait is not looking right into the camera.

It's quite surprising and refreshing, as one would expect a rather sharp focus here. But it goes the other way around with well balanced lighting in a softer focus and not as hard contours - which I think can be called one of your favorite kinds of photography?

Certainly one of those photos that one keeps on looking time after time, as the time passes by.

Nicely done portrait, making you wonder what she's looking at Andre! The tones work well, too.
