Isn't that great Gustavo? Startiung from an image we speak about definition of digital arts, and I think that this is a very very important part of it! Open, sincere discussion. More of it please!
I do find your idea for a definition a very good start! And I raise all the questions nor rhetorically but really because I wonder. We have a very interestuing phenomenon here: We use digital arts everyday and we still didn't define it. So perhaps also we are able to so things that we don't kniw what they are. Much like dealing with real numbers everyday and not really having a clue what they really mean, ey? ;-)

ja...ja...y sí, yo no dije que fuera fácil definir al arte digital, y que arriesgaba un principio de definición como para ir pensado la cosa... la verdad que podríamos hacer un esfuerzo y sumar opiniones para llegar a una definición mas sería, una especie de manifiesto del "arte digital", pensemos un poco....
Un gran abrazo y un placer compartir opiniones con vos pese al esfuerzo que nos cuesta entendernos, y para el café, yo creo que habrá oportunidad!

So, it is inherently connected to the usage of a computer. But as we all use the computer for photography since all images here *are* digital, the differentiation must contain both: The non-depictive character of the image, *and* the digital format. And still there are problems! For example I have made some multiexposures of flowers and trees and I didn't use any kind of digital alteration at all. Now, is that digital arts or isn't it? IF we say that it is, then we have the problem that no digital alteration has been used. But still such images doesn't show reality. So what are they? Perhaps the definition of digital arts is not so easy as it seems. It turns to be a very hard problem to solve if one looks a bit deeper, and perhaps there can't be a real definition at all but only a vague description of it. But nonetheless thinking about it is fruitable.
Thanks a lot for your thoughts - I continue thinking about it drinking that coffee with you all!

Gustavo, naive science has achieved more cognition of the world than any other branch of mental activity, even if there many too many who wouldn't take the work needed in order to be able to see for themselves. Science is not just "one possibility", it is the most efficient! And mathematics is the only science that proves its own imperfection. I mean a real proof and nor air bubbles spoken at will. You see, the fact that we can think of something in arts does not say absolutely anything about its possibility to exist. So, I prefer the paths that are not too self-convinced to assume the own completeness a priori.
And for me the documentary work in photography is way stronger than any kind of filters, alterations, and the like excuses for the inability to use the camera. Excuses from people that bring a not even surrealism, since: Surrealism (and many other streams in arts) is not simply smudging everything together and do something that looks "nice"! It should bring something to the specator to think about, even if it is only suggestive thinking! Now, for many too many "artistic" images here, please tell me, what is that which I should think about? About the gusto of the maker? Thanks a lot, and why should that be so interesting to me? Isn't it a bit too self-convinced to present the own liking automatically as "artistic work"? Or would you go to some concert in which the band can't play but just hits the instruments and says "this is artistic work?". Or much more, aren't the paintings of somebody like Dali that cause deepest thoughts in our minds? If a beginner like me doesn't have any interest to improve the own techniques, then he/she remain at the same promitive level - and that is really naive! To think that this level has any kind of importance for arts. So the forum *has* to apply the sharpest criticism instead of becomming some kind of "happy group" that never reads about for example the history of arts and thus doesn't have a single clue what the word means.
Your proposal for a definition is interesting and it can help a lot for understanding what is digital arts, but it has also big problems. As you said, the same kind of work that doesn't simply depict something real, has been done much earlier than the computer development. In fact the non-depicting methods in arts were applied almost already at the times of the Cro Magnon.

:-), bien, en la búsqueda de la calidad artística, y tratando de ser justos, no nos olvidemos que hay géneros de la fotografía, cómo el documental, por ejemplo, que no es artístico pero sí muy válido. No nos olvidemos tampoco que hay muchos fotógrafos aficionados y principiantes que viene a aprender y aún les falta madurez para ofrecer trabajos de calidad, y bien, todos tiene que tener cabida en UseFilm!...:-)
En cuanto a la definición de "arte digital", cuestión para nada fácil de dirimir, en "tardecita en Egipto", intenté, en conversación con Txules (prestale mucha atención es este cirujano español porque es muy bueno), intenté decía, un principio de definición:

Be sure that some day I *will* be drinking a coffee (or also something stronger ;-)) with you in Patagonia, Gustavo! And we will be discussing about everything under the the stars of the southern hemisphere.
I could take your words and put them into the most basic set of rules for this and any other forum about arts. Respect arts! Yes, don't use the word so easily! If we disprespect arts, we are going to disrespect everything. This is why I am so glad to see how careful you proceed. And this is also why I don't even dare say that I do artistic work. I don't know if I have what it takes, to stand upright in front of the nine Musae and say that "I am an artist". (They would laugh! ;-))
The much too easy definition of artistic work could destroy so much, I think. I see so many images too, that pretend to be artistic, and at the end they are only smudging around. Don't get me wrong, it's not the smudging itself that I want to criticize. It is the usage of smudging around as an easy way to camouflage the absence of spirit and vision. Or at the end also the absence of something to say at all. Unfortunately too many think that arts is just doing something on incidence. To all those people I would recommend a careful study of your work.
But there is also another thing that turns me optimistic again. I have the feeling that a small group of people is forming here, that has the will to work and approach arts. I mean people like you, or Avi, or Visar, or Andre... each of them with the own approach of course, but the common thing is that they all have the wish to approach arts and exchange the own thoughts with others. The discussion turns more and more interesting - exciting! So we shall proceed, like children that discover something and want to know more. Not like natural born gurus, but like persons who know that they have to discover and exchange infinitely much more. We know that we don't know anything. But we search.
I am so glad that you are there and that I can talk with you, Gustavo!

P.S.: About a special award for digital arts: What would be the definition of that, Gustavo? All our images here are digital at the end. One has to work out the very definition of that. I guess that it will bring big problems. But this is also why it can be so interesting.

Ja...ja...y sí, Germán nos está dando trabajo... pero bueno, estamos felices de todas formas.
Quiero decirte que aprecio mucho debatir con vos, porque estas conversaciones siempre son enriquecedoras, y además de las buenas fotos, yo las considero (al intercambio de ideas) entre las cosas más valiosas del sitio.
Estoy muy de acuerdo con vos con que se tiende a sobre valorar las fotos de los familiares, pero te digo más, muchos tienden a sobrevalorar cualquier tipo de fotos!...;-), se usa la palabra arte con demasiada liviandad y se pretenden artísticas fotos que ni merecen esa calificación, incluso con obvios errores técnicos... yo siempre le temo a eso, al escaso juicio y a la complacencia que tanto mal le hace al sitio. Muchos confunden la gentileza con la complacencia, y a nadie le sirven que le elogien falsamente una foto. Se publican muchas fotos, pero realmente pocas son verdaderamente artísticas o constituyen un verdadero aporte, único, original y novedoso...
Yo soy muy respetuoso ante la palabra arte, y siempre soy también muy riguroso a la hora de juzgar mi trabajo, no publico porque sí, y trato de que lo que publico esté por arriba de un mínimo de calidad y originalidad, que yo me impongo, busco que mi aporte sea genuino, a mi buen saber y entender, aunque a veces me cueste lograrlo y además UseFilm no me reconozca el esfuerzo (como podes ver yo tengo muchos premios pero casi ninguno de mi última etapa de “arte digital” que es la considero más original y de mejor calidad)...
Ahora bien, de todas formas trato de ser muy tolerante con los demás, porque la verdad, aquí, nadie es dueño de la verdad, y como reza el dicho popular “sobre gustos (y sobre arte, amplío yo) no hay nada escrito”...

Exactly, Gustavo! You really described that very well! And I think too that this ongoing discussion has to be carried out no matter of difficulties. It opens up new perspectives.
I am completely convinced that you do care very much about quality, since I can see that on your images. As you said it is about quality of a photo in any subject. A bad image is a bad image no matter of subject. And a good image is a good image as well, no matter what it depicts. So I can only be glad that you continue posting with so much care even when you post images of people that you love.
But this care that you have, like for example for this image, is unfortunately still not really very widely spread. The bad thing is that most posters react very allergic against critiques on some image of their own relatives. They react as if each and every image of their people were automatically "a masterpiece" only because it shows things and persons they love. So I am grateful to you for just discussing in peace about that, and telling also that it is the quality of the image that has to come first.

Ja...ja...y sí, según veo, deberemos seguir lidiando con nuestras diferencias idiomáticas...:-), pero vale la pena!
Ahora nos entendemos más, lo importante es que mantengamos en alto la calidad de las fotos que publicamos, por lo cual el problema no es que sean fotos familiares, el problema son las malas fotos de cualquier naturaleza, que en definitiva le restan calidad al sitio, y coincido con vos en que la calidad de los trabajos de los participantes son los que le dan la jerarquía al sitio.
Como verás yo soy muy cuidadoso al respecto: publico poco porque buenos trabajos no se hacen todos los días, me cuido de no repetirme, todos mis trabajos son diferentes, y en lo posible trato de ser siempre original, ese es mi aporte y creo que es positivo aunque muchas veces me salga demasiado de los cánones de la fotografía, que, reconozco es el objetivo primario de UseFilm, y respeto la generosidad del sito que pese a algunos episodios inexplicables de censura me permite la participación con estos trabajos de arte digital... Obviamente si publico una foto familiar además de ser significativa para los amigos, trato de que sea buena también desde lo artístico y fotográfico...

Oh yes, the translations of Google tend to be horrible at times. Or perhaps... hmm, perhaps I could go learn a bit spanish? How long does it take until I could be able to say something reasonable except of course "hasta la vista", or "muchas gracias"? Perhaps one year?
As about forums, well, let's extrapolate your idea, Gustavo. Assume that there is a forum for photography and we start posting images that are not good, but just because they show some of the persons we love. (Only an assumption, OK?) If we assume that the quality of the image is not important, then we end up posting images that we ourselves find not good from the side of photography, but that we like because they depict the persons we love. Now, the question to me is, is there any limit that prevents us from posting absolutely bad images? If we take into consideration that the assumption of importance of the depicted persons is the only valid thing, then I can't see any limit. It can get very dangerous then, because there could be no real own convinction about the photographical part of our work. And this stands in contradiction to the main reason for the forum. This is what makes me say, yes mates, post any image, but post it because you yourself find it good in the sense of photography too.
Hard questions for today night, and unfortunately the google translator would distort any philosophical content. But perhaps it does also good, since it shows how valuable any text can get, when its whole inner consistency is washed away. Same goes for photography and any other way of expression, I guess.

No image is good for posting just because it is the image of somebody we love and care for. It is a photography forum, not a family album. The community is not some kind of online coffee-bar for simply getting to know each other. It is an online coffee.bar for getting to know each other for *photography*.
You see, why do you think that I could be interested to see some person on an image because of the person? Do you really think that the center of the universe is some kid just because it is yours or somebody else's? That's the typical naive behavior of converting a forum to some online-meet-each-other club, and this would be the best way for the forum to die. (I was also in forums that died thgis way because the member went the way you described and were posting terrible images just because it way their kids or their houses or similar.) It is the *image* that connect us, the photography, not our families.
Take for example this image. It is good that you posted that, but for me it is completely indifferent in the first line if that's your daughter or anybody else. It is interesting because it is a good image. Only after that I can proceed and listen to what you say about the depicted persons, etc. If the image would be bad, I wouldn't care a bit who it is. The image would remain bad and thus not good for posting. And would really tell you that, without taking into consideration at all that you are the father, Gustavo. Exactly as you must do when you find some of my images to be bad, even if they depict my favorite things like guitars and the like. There would be no reason to say anything good i you would find the images bad, or else it would be like lying just because I happen to love guitars. And with lies there can be no forum.

mmm, no coincido para nada con vos Nick sobre este punto.
Aquí finalmente conformamos una comunidad virtual, y en una comunidad los integrantes no son simples espectadores, la gente finalmente se conoce y fundamentalmente se relaciona, aquí se hacen amigos además de ver fotos.
Las anécdotas e historias personales, así como las opiniones y las discusiones, son muy importantes, porque nos ayudan entender el arte de los demás. No te olvides que en definitiva la mayoría hacemos arte para expresarnos y nuestras fotos hablan mucho de nosotros mismo. En ese sentido a mí siempre me interesó conocer a la persona que está detrás de una obra artística, conocer al artista.
Tener en nuestro portafolios un álbum familiar?...porque no?, incluso el sitio, UseFilm, propuso un proyecto, el Nro 9, que se llama "Pictures of Our Members", por otra parte, porqué no se puede hacer arte fotografiando a la propia familia?, yo creo que sí...
Un hecho tan especial como la llegada de un hijo al mundo es algo que por un lado se puede fotografiar artísticamente, pero por otra parte es algo que naturalmente se quiere compartir con los amigos, y qué mejor forma de compartirlo con los amigos de UseFilm que subiendo una foto de ese mágico momento?...:-)

Again, a forum for photography cannot be interested as much for any parentship if the image doesn't meet some certain criteria, Gustavo. If we think that the whole world is primary interested so much for our children, relatives, whatever, then we convert a forum to a family album, and that's both naive and egoistic. You are of course the happy father, but we, the spectators, are only the spectators. So, it's nice to see that you don't get that much into the usual "see my family" approach, that doesn't say anything at all, but you keep posting images that are good images even for somebody that isn't the father of the children.

Gracias Anne!, bueno, una semana difícil, mi esposa se complicó con una gastroenteritis que seguramente se contagió en la clínica durante la internación, y bueno, vómitos, anemia, deshidratación, sueros, inyecciones, enfermeros, y muchas horas sin dormir, pero ya está saliendo adelante. Por el lado de Germán todo perfecto, un dulce, y muy buenito, siempre y cuando no tenga hambre!...:-) Julia, mmmm, impactada!, que solo sienta peligrar su reinado absoluto ya es mucho para ella!...:-)
Una alegría leerte y espero que regreses descansada y con nuevas buenas fotos, un gran abrazo afectuoso!

A very good timing and also lighting here, Gustavo! You oreserved the special character of the moment without getting too kitschy. The different lighting on the skin of the girl and the baby make the different ages/states of the two quite tangible, and the shadows add quite a peaceful note to the image. I also find the good separation from the background wall very nice.
