Last Sunday morning I entered Domus Sessoriana after a long walk from the city center. I could have been wrong or I also feared a fake address for my hotel internet booking. The entrance gate showed number 10 as I entered this impressive dome and next enjoyed listening to the monks chorus and their devoted music. A beautifully painted wall and ceiling underlined the special experience. Looked at the details, forgot all time myself but my small camera captured less of a second. Turned my head while leaving my seat in front and saw a woman behind me for which I still clearly remember her beauty and hopeful eyes. This experience I could not capture only describe. Also what type of hope and what about I could not know and I will probably never know. I felt happy because her regard, this expression was addressed to me, even as I could not capture this precious moment as a photographer. During the week some more precious moments, some captured, some not. Short nights, very long city walks during day and night. Tired, but happy at my own and so many others on my way.
Domus Sessoriana lies inside an Archaeological complex were there are the ruins of the Temple of Venus and Cupid. In the ancient times State councils were held, inside there is also the gorgeous Castrensian Amphitheatre which dates back to the epoch of the Emperor Eliogabalo (218-222). In the Amphitheatre there use to take place shows involving gladiator fights and battles between humans and wild beasts; now it hosts the Cistercian Vegetable Garden. The building is divided in two sections.
The Conventual wing On the right face of the Basilica, occupies part of the Ancient Monastery which is sited on three levels that includes the hall, the refectory and rooms of various dimensions all delicately furnished. From the floor it is possible to see the Temple of Venus and Cupid. A glazed lift allows to admire majestic canvas of the nineteenth century.
The Aurelian wing On the left according to the face of the Church, occupies a building that extends towards the Imperial Amphitheatre. It is situated on five floors which are completely restructured and delicately furnished, connected with an internal lift. The rooms look over on the archaeological remains of the Imperial Villa of Constantine.
So I also found my hotel room here, in just one wing in Domus Sessoriana, right at number 10 at this exceptional devoted place.
