About This is a Timber Rattlesnake that I almost stepped on while in the pursuit of capturing a flowering cactus. I know that snakes creep out some people but I am posting it because I want to show the way that they are colored for camouflage. Be well and keep safe, Stan

Marty, I will post another one with the head in focus this weekend after I doctor one up a little. It was a quick shot and I just was not real steady. I have some armament, just no handguns. Hope all is well and going good for you. Be well my friend, I will dedicate the head shot to you, Stan

Stan,

Well I would post a full version of the head shot myself... ;)

I picked up a little fire arm today, that might have been better than the Canon, in which the head would be the Target... hehehe

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/Guns-Handguns-Semi-Automatic-22-Long-Rifle-Ruger-Model-22-45-Mark-III-Rimfire-Handgun-22-Long-Rifle-Blued_QQ58077_QQ2947

Just a target pistol, but it would have rid you of the pests in the yard and all...

I will leave this up with the other picture posted in the comments. I was not sure and posted this because of the great exposure and colors. Head was iffy but I shot on reflex and that was what it was, thanks for the honest comment.
Be well and have a great week, Stan

After I almost stepped on him we were both aware. I took a couple of quick ones and went on my way. My auto focus must have been fooled by the grass and my fstop should have been at least 11. I just was not paying attention to camera settings in the excitement. They are scattered in Montana. Many places have no rattlesnakes. I just happened to find one of the areas that do. Thanks for the comment and the honesty. I do appreciate you very much,be well, Stan

Stan! A rattlesnake? Yucki. It looks so aware of your presence and well on his guard. Great quick shot. I wish his face was more in focus though. I love MT but from now on whenever I am there I feel like I have to look beneath my feet at all time!

Joggie, this is the shot with the head in focus. Just did not check my stops before I bailed out.

Bruce, hope your team does well this year. I prefer the baseball team over the real thing. I respect these rattlesnakes and try to give them enough room. Not in a hurry to get confrontational.
Be well, Stan

Thanks Dave, Missed the focus and dof a little in my haste to shoot and walk away. I do not like to push them too hard, so I left after a couple of minutes.

Keith, I was about 3 ft away when I saw him and was quickly about 10 ft after that. I move pretty good for my age. I took 3 quick shots and left him alone to chill out and go his own way.
Be well, Stan

Yes Maurizio, he was in the process of rattling his tail as I was getting the shot. These are poisonous if you get bit. I see them all summer long. I try to peacefully co-exist with them. I have had a few close calls over the last 30 years. Thanks for your interest and comment.
Be well, Stan

Thanks Jerry, I got my surprise photo op and left him to his own schedule. They keep the mice population to a reasonable level. I just keep my eyes open this time of year. I am deaf enough that I cannot here the rattle so I rely on my sight and fortune. Be well, Stan

Thanks Joggie, I think in the heat of the moment I was not checking my dof and missed it by a couple of settings. F/11 would have covered it a little better. I have another picture with head in focus but it was overexposed. Thanks for you honest critique and time spent sharing your thoughts.
Be well, Stan

John thanks, he was standing his ground and I was about 10 feet away. I have stepped on two in the last 30 years. They blend in so well.

You did well to get this shot, Stan! I don't think I'd want to stick around to long with him there.

Thanks for showing Stan. Solid looking creature. Good to have a zoom. Hate to see you trying to get this shot with a 14mm or something lol. Be well. Keith:)

On the left it seems to have a rattle, so I think this is a very dangerous snake... Very interesting capture.

Great shot of this menacing creature. I'm sure he has his
place in nature but I want to be somewhere else!!!!!!

A lovely snake Stan - pity the head is out of focus! Just remind us how careful one needs to be in the veldt. Fine work.
