About The light was so nice as it was reflected and diffused by the small petals. It was that what I wanted to get, and so I thought that softening the focus would be the right thing to do. But alas, it wasn't! So, anybody any ideas about how to enhance the soft touch of light in such scenes?

Possibly a sharper focus, then adding the softness in PS after might be what your after, Nick.
