I can imagine that removing some leaves beside the stone would result into a better look, but I don't know how to do that without affecting the contours of the stone itself. Still, the backward engineering conslusion of your idea is very valuable, since it simply suggests that I should remove those leaves (in reality) before the shot.
I don't think that a documentary character implies such a complete "freedom" of composition, though. It has to somehow "match" the documented subject, chosen adhustments, and so on.
Actually, if I remember well, I didn't really "compose" in the sense of being a bit more careful about what I take into the image and what I leave out of it. So, it wouldn't be OK from me now to pretend that I "freely composed", and thus even accepting the "freedom of composition" doesn't really have to do much with this case. This is exactly the reason why I ask about a possibly better composition.
