I think I can see that exactly this way on the image, Andre. Wasn't that a time when this celebration was not as connected with merchandizing? I can remember very well too that we didn't even think of all that buying and glamour. It was more or less the essence that you display on the image. Perhaps it was historically/religiously "false" even then, but it was much more humanistic and this is what counts at the end.

Nowadays... what became of that? It kept the falseness from the scientific point of view and it also rejected that humanistic approach which it once had. The cultural elements of social tradition were replaced by the "cultural elements" of marketing. A big loss for me.

So, what is the "good" side of that today? I can only see in general a big party and support of senseless consuming. Much like in times when the Romans identified the good with "beard and games". We know what happened after that. ;-) I can only be glad for some few exceptions that still exist, but unfortunately exceptions confirm the rule.

Hi Nick,
I think for me, it has something of the nostalgic element. How I remember Christmas as a child.

Hmmm.. yours captures the more directly human idea of the whole, Andre! It is more "home", people around the tree, etc. It is also more traditional in the sense of showing the typical light and colors, etc.

On my image, if I wouldn't say that it is Christmas, it could have also been taken as anything else too, say a festival, or concert, or anything, even by people that do know "how Christmas look". Your image makes it completely clear that it is about Christmas - be it false or not.

Cheers!

Hi Nick,
One thing I didn't really pay any attention to before now is that in my "traditional" Christmas image and your "modern" Christmas image, there is not a hint of anything religious. So, in that sense, I suppose they are both "false Christmas" images to some people.

Andre, this is always a nice thing to have, namely that kind of "understanding" of the image the way it was intended. Of course nobody should expect this to happen exclusively but sometimes the intention seems to be written with big big letters on the image itself. In this case even I saw that typical Christmas look and feel, even if I don't have to do anything at all with this holiday.

So, I would dare pose the opposite question here: Is it possible to not see Christmas on this one? (Provided of course that the spectator knows about Christmas.) I think that it is almost impossible since the image speaks for itself. As you told me some time ago, it is better for an image to not "scream" and try to look like coated with sugar. I guess that this happened here. There is the typical joy of the season but not at all that kind of "hollywood glory" and "false luxury" which unfortunately invaded almost all holidays in all cultures of this earth.

BTW, for another point of view about the whole Christmas "thing" I am uploading also one image today. In case you have the time and the will, please tell me what you think.

Cheers!

Thanks very much Nick.
I was pretty pleased with the results on this shot. So, I'm glad a few people interpreted it the way I intended it.

I've seen many photographical season's greetings but this must definitely be the warmest one, Andre! Perhaps because of the combination of your rich deeper colors with the yellow-ish lights. It seems that the two things were made for each other in this one.

The physical details coupled with details of small light shines are also very "seasonal" in the classical sense. Again a very good exposure balance.

The composition does have its imperfect edges and cuts but I tend to look it more "as a whole" and so it seems that I oversee the imperfections. They don't disturb me at all.

Cheers!

This photo captures the christmasy feel better than any I have ever seen. You have managed to take a photo that brings many emotions to the observer, and that is one of the most difficult things to do in photography in my mind. Perfect capture.
