I think it is that "atmosphere of infinity" that inspires so many of us to try images of this nature. There is something sort of haunting about horizons that mesmerizes us somehow.

Well, that's absolutely understandable to me, Andre! There will be always places and things that we never stop photographing again and again. I know that from myself too, when I look at some series that are never "finished". ;-) When I thought that I should have a "small" series about for example the lake here, I assume some 10 ir 15 photos and now... I don't count them anymore. ;-) But this is a part of what seems to evolve to a study, I guess. Even if some images show the same scene they will never be identical in light, weather, mood, etc.
I'll be very glad to see some more of your shots of that place, and so I wait patiently. I know that you can't resist and that it is only a matter of time. ;-)

You are right about the area. I never get tired of shooting landscapes or "lakescapes" of this area. The moods change with the weather. Or does the weather change with the mood? I doubt I will ever stop taking my camera for walks by the lake, so I'm sure there will be more to come :)

Thanks a bunch for the attachment, and quite a good shot too, Andre! It is different than the image you posted both in composition and also in mood and light, but it is good in its own way.
I must say, you really managed to turn your intention to an image with "No Line On The Horizon". Which for me is one of the main points in photographic work, namely to make visible what you see, the way you see it. There has to be that kind of "hitting the inner strings" first, in the sense of getting the vision, realizing the character of the subject, which in turn does something and generates an image in mind. It is then how to make this "imaginary" image real by translating it into settings, adjustments, composition and so on.
BTW, I really hope to see some more of that place, especially because it is so near to your house. It seems to be ideal for such images that look "isolated" and in some ways also overcoming all kind of human definition of time.

I know what you mean Nick. Showing the shore line and beach down below, along with the cliffside certainly changes the entire mood of the image. As you say, a degree of "spectacularity" then comes into play. That wasn't my intent for this image as you are aware.
I attached a sample that proves your point. The attached image shows the height of the drop to the shore. It isn't quite the White Cliffs of Dover, but it is a pretty scenic area. This is a three or four minute drive from my house.

I also like it very much the way it is, Andre. The presence of the beach could raise spectacularity, and perhaps you can give that a try too, when you get back there. But this way you extracted something out of the scene, of which I think remains unnoticed most of the time.

Thanks for telling me, Andre! This surely adds much in my bag of understanding and knowledge! I also thought that the grass was about 1 meter or so above the level of the lake. The reflections on the surface of the water on the near field make it look as of it would be just the lentgh of an arm away.
So, concluding from your description I see that it is possible to enhance the feeling for depth by shooting from an angle above the surface of implicit leading lines, when it is not possible to state how far that surface was. This makes the surface much better visible because of the much less flat angle, but still maintains the strength of the implicit leading lines at flatter angles. Really, good to know!

Hi Nick,
There is something else about this image that is not really apparent from viewing it. That is when I took this, I am standing on the edge of a cliff/bluff that is about 40 meters above the lake. I am on the same level as the grass, looking over the side of a steep drop. I think this might add to the feeling of depth in the image. I really should have mentioned about the steep drop because I can see how people might think that the grass is only centimeters from the water.

Again I agree fully with you, Andre! Just a bit of something as a "marker" makes all depth much stronger immediately. Is it perhaps because space os more perceivable in its depth when some object is in that space in such a way that one can say between here and there? To my impression it is, but I don't have much knowledge about the theory of such effects.

I never saw a better stealing, Andre! This one combines the differences that make up for the depth so brilliantly! There is contrast of sharpness, hue, and also coloring.
The composition is just about perfectly balanced to me. I don't see anything that could be added or subtracted from the image. It is making the most out of just a few good elements.
The already mentioned tension between "here" and "over there" is very high considering the differences of sharpness and light between the foregound and the background, but there is also a steady and smooth kind of flow between the good details of the grass and the hotozon that dissolves into fuzzyness. The intermediate layer of water seems to transform the one kind of view into the other both ways.
The overall lighting feels like being perfectly suited for such an image. I think that a sunny day's light would pollute this one, at least in the sense of atmosphere.
The almost 50mm focal length did its best for a very real and tangible depiction too. No exaggerations, but also no neglections. Perfect balance to me!

it seems a beautiful picture with the wires in foreground grasses that increase the depth and distance. the posting of the sky and the sea in a square cut almost set up one shot very "enclosed" and delicate.

Thanks for the nice comment. It was a very thin layer of ice that normally doesn't form so far from shore. We had an extended period of no wind. As soon as the wind picked up later in the day, the scene was completely different.

It is really ice... but very thin and it only lasted for a little while that day. This was early morning, cold and no wind at all. Later in the day when the wind picked up, the thin ice disappeared. I had a similar shot posted on New Year's Day without the grasses in the image.

I posted another one from that same day back in January. It was early in the morning, New Years Day, with no wind on the lake and just cold enough for a very thin layer of ice.
BTW In case you don't know, U2 is performing songs from the new album every day this week on David Letterman's Show.
