About I saw this dragonfly on a blade of grass. It had a really unique and brilliant color and as I was getting my tripod setup, it flexed its wings in a very non-dragonfly-like way. Never seen such a sight before so I fired away. These low-res pictures simply don't do it justice. I can actually count the hairs on its legs.

Thanks Riny!

StingRay - thanks. I'm involved in a lot of things so my portfolio is pretty diverse. I'm always looking for something interesting and unique to photograph. The 300 2.8L is new and I am having a lot of fun with it. I often shoot very early and very late light and the 100-400 just wasn't getting me the shutter speeds I needed without bumping the ISO higher than I wanted. Paired with a 1.4x, I am finding it extremely versatile. I love Canon DPP. Thanks Ray and happy shooting!

Randy, thanks. Good point - it looks good enough for web use. It looks amazing in print though so anybody stealing it would be missing out!

I'm going to have to do some research and see if I can figure out what it is. Lots of bird id books but I suspect I won't find any dragonfly identification guides!

Marcus & Gust@vo - thanks so much for the comments, I'm glad you like it.

Brigitte, I was carrying the camera already mounted on the tripod so it was just a matter of spreading the legs and getting as close as I could focus while praying that it stayed there. I thought I was taking a photo of a simple dragonfly... then it spread its wings and I fired away!

Don - thank you. I knew of no other way to make it work. Rule of thirds just wouldn't work here.

Love your work Jeff, you have a great portfolio. Love too your work kit have used all but could never afford that brilliant 300mm lens. Just read your bio and I am 100% with you.....I too cannot quite grasp the workings of photoshop, I dabble but would never post and any adjustments I make are also done with Canon photo pro.

This is an excellent macro with a wonderful bokeh and great clarity of detail, well don e to you. Best wishes......Ray

I have found that true also. (image quality)
The photo you see on your monitor will be reduced in quality when observed on most any website by the website's imaging program. Not a bad thing tho................ it reduces the chance for anyone to steal your image............ my theory anyway.
I too, have never seen anything like the image you have shown here. We have lots of them around here to, but that's a great image even if personally, you consider it not doing "justice" to the quality. Looks absolutely great to me.

Nice find, Jeff. I'm happy to see the dragonfly was patient enough to wait for you to set up the tripod... I don't have this kind of luck usually! I like your nature shots and how "off-the-beaten-path" they are... very nice work. 7/7
