You have two very beautiful dogs, the best natural dog pics I find are the ones which you take without a tripod and wide angle lens. Try to use a short telephoto and to get the dogs together take a few dog biscuits with you, it always gets their attention, try to get the dogs to look up a little by waving your hand around with a biscuit in it. Use a flash at a very reduced power, I set mine at -2 it's just to put the all important catchlights in their eyes. Above all, be patient, it is very difficult, but worth it - Richard.

Hi Kim,
Nice photo of Neko and Fia. I agree with Mark below. You can't really tell whether Neko is actually licking Fia's nose or not. I'm guessing it's an optical illusion. Looks like they were swimming some time before you shot the photo. I don't think the collars detract from the photo, but others have made that comment on some of my dog photos. Might be nice to try it without them and see what it looks like. Fia almost looks as if she's trying to back away from that tongue. Definitely a cute photo. If you're looking for ideas, you might try getting a small "clicker" or "squeaker" to bait them with just before releasing the shutter. This will get them to looks at you and their ears will be up and forward. Nice job.

I like it. As someone who has tried double and multiple pet shots, I know the difficulties increase exponentially with the number of pets. The collars don't bother me that much. Our dogs have Invisible Fence collars and I really regret it when I forget to take those off because they don't look very good. The flowers are a nice touch. It's hard for me to tell if Neko is actually licking Fia's nose or if they're just overlapping that way. I also wonder about the way the top of the hill just touches the top of Neko's head. Maybe a slightly higher perspective would help, but that's a really minor point. Again, nice doggie picture. (And I also have an old FG that I still like to use.)

Thanks Afzal for the suggestions, and for taking a look. The darker of the two in Neko and the lighter one, Fia. We laugh about the naming of Neko, as we found out later that it means CAT in japanese. Who knew? *grin*

Nice one! Your eye for color shows through again on this. I also like the diagonal composition of the background and how it compliments the diagonal (in the opposite direction) formed by the difference in heights of the dogs. The flowers in the foreground are a nice touch.
I have to agree with Toni in that the light seems too harsh making the shadows very dense and too contrasty.
btw...what are they called...your two beauties?

Kim, Let me try... I m not a pet photographer and have never tried before.
Here is how I see this shot. Since you have good amount of head room, I would not cropped the dogs out. I think that would work better for this composition. Check out this cropping. I have another version too...
You mentioned that you liked the grass and sky color... Sky color, yes, but somehow the grass not green in color but pale, is bit bothering me.
I know its very tough to get the cooperation from pets. I guess you have done a good job on getting them and posing for your shot. Thats well done.

Thanks for the comment, Toni. This was taken at about 10:00am so the light was just starting to get harsh. I wanted to capture the bright blue sky with the different colours around them, so I avoided an overcast sky. I should have gotten my butt out of bed earlier and tried for the sunrise glow light.

Kim, this is a good capture. I just feel the sun is too harsh. I recently attended a workshop where I was told the sun can be our worst enemy when shooting animals. Try this again on a bright overcast day.
