Ok, since this is a CC post… here goes… the subject speaks for itself. Seeing the lines and lines of stones tells of offering and sacrifice. A photograph can never out-do the subject… we can only show and share what is understood. That being said, take a long look at this post… the image is solid… but look around the edges. I believe photography is not only subject and lighting but balance, as well. And when I say “balance” I mean exactly that. Place this pic on the scale of vision and it does not sit well. The thought and subject are grand… but oft times a photo or painting only shines when the frame sets it off. I am not saying to put a frame around this… but I see a small adjustment in the cropping. The high view of trees does nothing to help the image. They draw the eyes upward and that defeats the purpose of the message: waters it down. The two bits of headstone in the lower foreground work the same way… they pull the eyes and mind away from the central image. When shooting something like this, with a definite meaning, the image should wallow in that meaning. The thought behind a photograph is central… the presentation is crucial. I am not saying my adjustment is right… I am offering an alternative to a shot taken but not thought through. When you see something… that is not the end-all. Photography is not just replicating… it is focusing. I offer the same pic but with a small adjustment to the view. The tall tops are gone, the two stones on the lower edge are gone… the tree to the left anchors that side of the photo and by leaving some headstones to the left of the tree it gives ta feeling of endlessness. If you see what I am saying, you are well on your way to making the leap from picture taker to photographer.
Not saying my opinion s right... just saying....look around the edges, pay attention to the background... make your horozons level (horozons spelled that way on purpose... long story) See what you see and share what you mean. Then again... I could just be drunk..........

...and it just stretches on. This is a pretty sobering vision, Matt.
