A male elephant feeding along the banks of the Kinabatangan River. The Bornean Pygmy Elephant is the smallest species of elephant. The tall grass in the foreground is Elephant Grass and is the elephants' favorite food. Although the area in the photograph looks quite jungly, I was told that the jungle does not extend very far back from the river. Much of the native jungle in Sabah Province has been cut down and replaced by vast Oil Palm plantations. On our half day trip up the river we were able, however, to see Proboscis Monkeys, Hornbills, and an Orangutan. There is still enough jungle for them all to survive for the time being.
