Danny,
This is an awesome photo even with the background. I agree that minimizing the depth of field helps the photo. I absolutely love the photograph. I've taken some of the tiger here at the Phoenix Zoo, but they certainly didn't turn out as great as this one.

Lovely shot! Especially effective as you waited for the tiger to look straight at you. Shame about the fencing in the background, but you've minimised its impact with DOF. I thought cropping a little off the left and right might reduce the fencing but it didn't really work when I tried it.
Nice one!
