======================================= Comment by mr Rueben Goossens of www.ssMaritime.com
I noted that there is one photo that seems to be out of place, as the JVO appears to have a black hull, instead of the corn coloured one she had at the time one, and that is the one shown on: wolfzorrito.deviantart.com/art/Port-Said-in-1947-bridge-162520701. It cannot be her sister, for she had already sunk, and although no name can be seen on the lifeboats, it is obviously her. Thus this photo must have been one of her at a later date for she returned to a black hull in 1951. Thus did he take this on the voyage home?
======================================== Comment by Harry :
When I look at the position of the upper deck and lifeboats then my impression is that the front of the ship is at the left side of the image. Comparing that with a general view of the position of ship versus the shore and floating bridge at wolfzorrito.deviantart.com/art/Port-Said-in-1947-general-162341407 I must conclude ship is heading for Amsterdam. What I also notice is that the passengers are civilians from the "upper class" ( well dressed ) and all have clothing suitable for the tropics and all passengers have a nice suntan. I also presume the photo is made in Egypt, port Said because of the clothing of the 2 guards at front and port Said being probably the only place for a short stop for the ship on its voyage.
Now I do have the details on dads return journey. 1950 April 1st he is leaving Priok aboard the U.S.S. General C.H. Muir (AP-142) . Details of this ship are available on: www.angelfire.com/zine2/muir/shipshistory.html and on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_General_C._H._Muir_%28AP-142%29
Some passing points on his voyage: 1-4-1950 Priok departure 17-4-1950 Jebel Islands, Arabia 17-4-1950 Falcon Islands, Arabia 18-4-1950 Suez Canal entrance, Egypt 20-4-1950 Sierra Nevada, Spain 24-4-1950 Arrival Netherlands in probably Amsterdam or Rotterdam. 27-4-1950 departure from Bremerhaven with destination New York The U.S.S.
