About A child, about 1925

I learned that most children would be sent to work
after elementary school but this kid had to work
his *ss of at age of 6 or 7. No school for him. He
was lucky they could pay for a pile of photographs
( for 1 Gulden , that would be about the cost for
say 3 luxury Easter breads, a small fortune )

Now we are at the subject of children:

Today 11-11 is the celebration of St Maarten or
Sint Martinus. The children in the region I was
born in go from door to door with a lantern or a
light/candle in a hollow beet and sing their song
about St Maarten. As a reward they get candy or
sweets or money.

Songtext is quite easy"

Sint Maarten, Sint Maarten,
de koeien hebben staarten.
De meisjes hebben rokjes aan,
daar komt Sint Martinus aan.

Note that in most songs Sint Maarten is used while
I know the text as referring at the end to Sint
Martinus. I was born in Groningen and Sint Martinus
is the patron of that city ( as the name of the
largest church in Groningen shows: Sint Martinikerk
)

November is known for its storms, rains and other dangers you had to face as a kid.
Lanterns catching fire, lanterns being blown away by the wind or soaked by the heavy rain.

At young age it was a school for warfare tactics how to obtain as many candy's as you could. Knock on a door alone was a bad option. Being a bit you you would not be heard. Joining a group was better since 11 children beating at a door would awake even the dead. And you would know exactly what houses were generous in attention and gifts and what doors would hide the people keeping it all for themselves.

I remember doing this so myself and I still see the
image of turning upside down the bags that had
filled with my treasure gathered during the
celebration. I must have sung a hundred songs that
evening. 45 years ago but I see every detail fresh as if it were yesterday

Once the goodies were assorted in coins, sweets,
chocolats and other stuff the party started. An so
I got hyperactive and sick due to the overdose of
sugar. I must have been in ADHD or PD NOS mode,
ready for
Ritalin.

Amiens is not far away from Compiègne, two towns in Northern France. In Compiègne something happened that today whole France has a bank holiday : Armistice.
Sint Maarten celebrated today in The Netherlands, Armistice today celebrated in France and ....
apparently the two different celebrations have no similarities or a a common origine but have something geographically in common.

"While Martin was still a soldier at Amiens he experienced the vision that became the most-repeated story about his life"

The armistice between the Allies and Germany was signed in a railway carriage in Compiègne Forest on 11 November 1918, and marked the end of fighting in the First World War on the Western Front.

While Martin was still a soldier at Amiens he experienced the vision that became the most-repeated story about his life. He was at the gates of the city of Amiens with his soldiers when he met a scantily dressed beggar. He impulsively cut his own military cloak in half and shared it with the beggar. That night Martin dreamed of Jesus wearing the half-cloak he had given away. He heard Jesus say to the angels: "Here is Martin, the Roman soldier who is not baptised; he has clad me." (Sulpicius, ch 2). In another story, when Martin woke his cloak was restored, and the miraculous cloak was preserved among the relic collection of the Merovingian kings of the Franks.
St Martin and the Beggar, by El Greco, ca. 1597-99 (National Gallery of Art, Washington)

The dream confirmed Martin in his piety and he was baptized at the age of 18.[3] He served in the military for another two years until, just before a battle with the Gauls at Worms in 336, Martin determined that his faith prohibited him from fighting, saying, "I am a soldier of Christ. I cannot fight." He was charged with cowardice and jailed, but in response to the charge, he volunteered to go unarmed to the front of the troops. His superiors planned to take him up on the offer, but before they could, the invaders sued for peace, the battle never occurred, and Martin was released from military service.[4]
