About About 30 minutes after sunrise at a wildlife refuge near Washington, DC. This Great Egret strolled around plunging his bill into the water (look closely, you can see the water running off), usually catching a fish when he did.

Beautiful moment of the hunt - seems to have just grabbed that fish by the tail. Did a decent job with the exposure, the most important area, the feathers are well done. Water works well with the dark tone, but you lose detail in the fish. Too bad that the crop took out the remainder of the reflection.

Do you remember what teh effective length here was?

Wonderful image Bob. You have good clarity and color. Also like the
reflection. The water dripping off his bill adds much to this shot. Before I point out the negatives, I will state that I am a nature photographer (hobby) and know that everything is not perfect when you shoot in the wild. First I would have liked to have seen the entire reflection of the Egret and second it would have been really nice to not see so much clutter in the area of the reflection. All those sticks and such, really take away from the awsome reflection. My approach to wildlife photography is to study all my images and next time, if there is a next time, to really pay attention to all the fine details. Backgound being the most important aspect of this type of photography. Keep up the good work.

Great shoot! I agree the bird is a little over exposed. You have not commited the same mistake. Your bird is properly exposed. I like the fact that you were able to get the shot with the fish , that's cool. In my shot, the bird has his right foot on a turtle. Not too long after the shoot, the bird slipped off the turtle, and after regaining composure, it seemed as if to be looking around to see if anyone saw him.

Thanks for the comment

Nice shot, Bob! You say you can't believe I got my Egret handheld, but how else do you do it? Did you set up your tripod where you anticipated the Egret to be, and just wait? I get all kinds of comments from people telling me my 12X handheld shots are a "little soft," (see my Bananaquit Bird, e.g.), but I don't know how to get a tripod set up in time under a tree, before the little bird flits off! Luckily, my camera has an Image Stabilizer, making it possible to get sharp enough results anyway. But I guess I've got a lot to learn! (I do love those Egrets, though!)

Exquisite capture, Bob. Wonderful light and reflections.

And you're absolutely right, it's a tremendous contrast to my blue heron photo. Part of the difference (sadly) is that yours was taken at a wildlife refuge, and mine on a recreational lake. Sadly, things are so bad here in terms of the locals defacing a beautiful countryside that the state (at one point) ran a commercial about "there ain't no lower class than Tennessee trash" (sung by Waylon Jennings). They need to bring it back ...

You have a lovely portfolio, btw. :) I enjoyed seeing it.

This is a wonderful capture of this bird. Sharp, good color and contrast. The white of the bird is not washed out by too harsh a light. To be picky, I wish that you had more room left to capture the whole reflection with a little space just beyond, the it could not be faulted. Well done. Regards.
