there are a few other tricks to shooting from the water but before i say anything i'll see what else you come up with. ;) don't worry about the dof with f/4, you'll be just fine. you want to be within a few feet of the surfer anyway.
kim, some water housings do accomodate a flash and there are certain situations where it would be useful. however, i've found that a flash in the water gives a real hard edge to the photo but there are lots of water photogs who are working with flash now. i've seen some pretty cool shots where they tag teamed, one swam with the camera and the other swam with a slave unit.

thanks for the comments everyone, Sean - yeah mate i shoot exclusively from the water (much more of a challenge and incredibly fun) and thanks for the apeture tip ill keep it around f4 i just wanted to get a nice DOF in the shot. Kim - sadly my funds restrict me to using a heavy duty plastic bag as my water housing and it does not accomodate a flash, but im really not worried, i like to keep my photos as natural as possible. I shoot not from a boat, but by swimming and treading water in the surf, and as for the cropping i didnt crop any of the photo just the black bits of the film holder that i accidentally scanned. Sam

Would there be any chance of getting some flash on his face to lighten it up a bit? With a 50mm lens I'm guessing you were in a boat close by? (or was the teensy bit o' cropping really a huge chunk?) Everything else looks pretty good... just would like some detail on his face to see his expression.

sam, not bad. gotta love that water color down by you. makes me jealous. i take it you're a water shooter? i would recommend having your aperture just a tad wider. i don't usually shoot any smaller than 5.6. you want that shutter speed in the 500 - 1000 range. i would also recommend trying velvia 100f for film. i think you'll be extremely happy with it. looking forward to seeing some more work from you.
