Alex - I picked up this technique from Plonsky's page as well, it really brings you in close and at a very marginal cost too. You need lots of light and I put together a diffuser hood of sorts over my 420ex that reflects the light down on the subject at the appropriate distance.

Thank you all for your kind comments. Stefan, my flash was directly attached to the camera's hot-shoe and angled forward, parallel to the lens.
