Another shot of my daughter on a horse for the first time, back in early September. I've just put a framed copy of this on my wall - what do you think?
I think I was about 3 metres away from Jenny, so my guess is that I used approx 50/60mm focal length. I really can't remember exactly. I do know that I didn't use the 28mm end of the zoom for this shot, because I took some full-horse shots from about the same spot, where I would have used the 28mm end of the zoom. Maybe the fact that Jenny's feet look a little large, is because they are quite big (poor girl!!).
Sarah. I like this one, it's a very natural and beautiful photo. It looks to me that you took the photo on the wide side from close up. Is this correct? The feet have more perspective and you appear to have been close to Jenny.I think it would have been a little nicer from a distance and more zoom, but I suppose you can't have total control of positioning when horses and children are involved( I know what it's like. Taking photos and having your mind on their safety simultaneously). That's all I can think of. The crop on top and bottom doesn't really worry me. I didn't really notice it at first because her pretty face sucks you right in!
You're right about the chopping off top and bottom. I agree that it would have been better if I had got her whole body in the pic. I think that the hardest thing about getting shots of kids, looking so natural, is that you have to be so quick on the shutter, that sometimes the framing isn't quite right. (or is that just me!!!??) Anyway, if I could do the shot again, then I would rectify the chopped bits, but then I could never get this exact shot again, so I guess I have to be content with this one. Thanks again for the kind words.
Nice portrait but I have to agree with Jim, about the cutting off of the top and bottom. Good lighting on her face dispite the angle. She is quite cute! :)
Sarah, Jenny is so cute I just love the way you've captured her on film. The only thing I see here is that you've cut off the bottom of her foot and the top of her head. Try to get her whole body in from head to toe, other than that its a great shot.
