How close was I? I figure about a foot away from that front left hand, shot at 20mm. These macaques see tens of thousands of human visitors, and are quite used to people. I've had young monkeys climb on me (as long as I stayed still; if I moved they would back off), and they would play with my tripod, camera lenses, and camera pack. I'm attaching a shot of a young macaque trying to steal my wife, Marybee's sketchbook.

Hi Steve,
I love this shot, the macaque in the foreground is great of course, but it's the background that really makes the image for me. It must have taken ages to build the set, and ensure the snow splashes and rocks "explode" out from the center like that... and training all the furballs must have been some task! ;-) If I have any small quibble it's the perspective on the front arm, which makes it look a bit out of proportion - you must have been pretty close! In a way though, this helps the sense that this is his/her armchair at the baths. :)
