About This is the male Sandhill Crane who, with his mate, comprised the only crane occupants of Creamer Field in Fairbanks, Alaska this July day. Apparently unsucessful breeding pairs are found here along with immature and unpaired birds.

Very nice sandhill crane and pretty nice detail for the combo you were using. How far away were you?

The plant life in Alaska grows at a very high pace since the summer days are so long and the season is so short. It's almost like stop action as you can the differences from day to day in some cases. The plants are very, very green and the light was diffuse in this case so there were no shadows within the plants to shade the color. At this point in time the fireweed was beyond belief in its color and profusion just a few feet from this site. Attached is an image of the fireweed nearby.

Great Photo! Love the contrast between the green and plumage of the subject. Regrds, John.

The grass has a strange colour. I never seen such bird, it looks really beautifull. I think the rating from Lori is a bit low. You should overall get 6/7 at my opinion.

Very nice...I have never seen this type of crane! Beautiful! Good clarity and composition! Was the grass this vivid green? :)
