Hi Jo: Thanks for your kind comments. I think the bad reviews of the 100-400 are highly questionable. Most of the talk is hearsay and those who own the 100-400 are much more positive about them. I bought mine in 2002 and it has provided some spectacular shots for me. That said, there are sharper specimens even than mine out there. There is always some small variation in sharpness from lens to lens and the IS in the 100-400 is not the latest technical generation. There is a rumor of a newer model coming but I'm afraid its price will be much higher than the present model. In summation, it's a fine lens and picture quality is much more dependent on the photographer using it than it is on the lens. I have now passed the D60 on to my son and he has made some fine shots with it. I now use the 1D MKII with a 500mm f/4 for my hummers but I did keep the 100-400 and still use it constantly.

Hi Fred ... This is beautiful, as are the rest of your images. I'm thinking of getting a better lens for my D60. The 100-400 IS Canon doesn't get good reviews ... but your shots sure look great.
Any advice for me?

Incredible! Amazing feat! I mean to train a bird to pose that way . . . Who'd a thunk it? This must have been shot in some sort of preserve, right? Where they work with the captive animals every day.

Seriously, though, this is a wonderful shot. Well timed, composed, and focused -- and all this against a clean, uncluttered background! I can tell by your portfolio that you have devoted much time to perfecting your craft. Thank you for posting.

Stupendous shot, Fred. I am really impressed with your entire portfolio.
Regards, Jimmy
Thanks for your comment on my Nightfall post. I'll trade you some of my bayous for some of your mountains. I lived in the Springs for almost a year and loved it - even the winter. You did notice that my *ist is the film version? So far I'm satisfied with it. Just wish I could afford one of the fast telephoto lens. The 75-300 with the 4.5-5.8 is just not fast enough for wildlife shots unless I can get close enough and the subject stays still for me.

Fred, Outstanding photo - simply perfect. I'm also impressed with your mastery of the D60!!! Limited focus points, etc. You'll love the 1D when you get it - it has improved my sports photography capabilities and results beyond what I thought possible. Makes it hard going back to my 10D for sports. Now, I mostly limit use of my 10D to portraits, landscapes, and stuff where things are moving faster than I can see them. And, thanks for the comments!! On another note - keep in touch as I might have an idea for you regarding posting your panorama photos... Best regards and OUTSTANDING photo and portfolio!!! 5x7 for sure! Dan
