About Dear friends... I'm sorry I am not commenting so many photos anymore. It has a few different reasons. One is that I lost a bit enthusiasm when photos I rated 7 dropped down in rating. It feels uncomfortable to leave a comment, telling how much I like a photo, rate it 7, and the photo drops from lets say 5.8 to 5.7.

But also, spring has reached even Sweden (late is better than never) and I'm spending more free time to take photos than sit in front of PC. I will of course still follow your works, but probably comment less.

This photo is my son, yesterday, after a WHOLE day outdoors playing in Kidergarden. (Where he is when we are working) I love the cute innocense I captured in the eyes and the dirt is kind of sweet too! I have tried to crop this vertical, but it loses feeling... I don't know why. Original in colour, but I couldn't chose which one to put up.

HI Kristina!

This is fantastic. Fantastic in B&W.
7 from me.

I fully agree with U. All of my pic was degradaded in rating. But we can protest with comments and rating in our comments. Therefore i will give in all my comments the rating if i give.
Congrats to your wonderful son!

Cheers, Radák

Hello Elisa! And thanks, you make me so happy with your kind words!

Sorry for my late answer, lately I just don't get hardly any time for internet!

Oh yes, your question! Actually, you should ask that in the forum because it would really be interesting to hear how others do! I know that before I NEVER read the comments before I gave my comment. And I found it interesting to read after. But now I noticed on myself that I read the comments (if it's not too many, or to many same) before. I don't know why this has changed... perhaps because I learnt to know more people and it's interesting to see opinions from people I "know"?

I?ve already commented on this one ... I didn?t notice then that the colour version was already uploaded! Now when comparing them I think that the B/W works better considering the sad look. Anyway ... he looks so CUTE and adorable :)))

Usually I don?t read the thread before commenting. Sometimes it?s nice to see later how similar opinions somebody has written. It also happens (most of the times!) that I don?t read the thread at all. How about you Kristina?

Hi dear Kriss,I'm so sorry I couldn't follow your photos ... I have been caught up first in the ratings' discussion ( which unfortunately, despite all our efforts led to nothing! ) and then I have been cut off from Internet due to a fail of DSL lines.
This portrait is gorgeous. I was trying to decide if I liked it more in B/W or in colors, but I think that the dark sepia close to B/W you gave is more fitting regarding the expression of the boy.
Wonderful indeed!!! Many many congrats, Antonella
and naturally a 7 !!!!

Perfect capture of a wonderful expression, Kriss! Amazing how we're drawn to his big and beaultiful eyes.
Excellent definition and exposure.
Kriss, please don't leave the site, the confusion on the ratings system really doesn't mean much( at least to me ), the real thing is to share our work and make friends as wonderful as you.
My best regard! ..... Lucas

Kristina,
What a beautiful portrait of your son. Excellent light and detail, Wonderful Work!
Also I would not worry about rating photos, I think that comments mean much more than a rating.
I would much rather have one comment from a friend than 100 ratings. Hope you don't get discourage, as I enjoy your work very much.

Hello Kristina, that's a very nice portrait! I was curious about the color version I like also the color one 'cause the warm light is very nice. I used many photo-sites and the rating is always a delicate factor, I don't watch so much rating , I prefer comments regards

Dear friends! You are all so kind, and I really love recieving your comments so much, and also check your photos out and comment them!

I so agree with you that it's the comments that are important and really mean something!

To be honest, I really don't care what kind of rating I get as long as it comes with a comment. Probably because I have so many wonderful friends who I know follow my work and like them. But I think it feels awful if I comment someones photo, rate it 7 because I truly like it, and the persons photo drops in rating. And if I don't rate a photo anything, that means that I don't know what to rate it or I forgot etc, but I would hate it if that meant that I rated less than 1p. But I asked that in the forum and Al said it doesn't work that way, so I'm thankful for that.

I think they see it as a problem that too many 7's was given... and that 7 should mean absolutely perfection. But what IS absolutely perfection? For me it's a photo that I look at and it doesn't stay in my eyes but goes to heart.

I will visit you all back, it's just that we were away till late last night and today we are most truly out whole day so I have so little time for PC, but I WILL make time! ;-)

Khoi, I didn't have portrait mode because I was taking "running around" snapshots really. But you're absolutely right, that would most truly have been better! It's so hard with kids to spend time on camera settings, because when I do it always ends up that they are somewhere totally else when I'm finished... haha.

Thanks everyone for all the understanding and wonderful comments! See you soon!

~Kriss~

If you ask me, Kristina, I don't know which one to choose eiither. They're both so unbilievably beautiful! - Love them both. Your son is a very cute little chap (I've said so before but, just can't stop repeating it) and you captured a very beautiful expression on his face. A wonderful portrait that is going straight into my favourites.
About the rating. I completely agree with you. I know how you feel. It happened to me when I saw one of my latest shot with 7 reatings after 79 comments drop to 5.8. I first thought that something was wrong with the sight again. Definitely not nice, expecially cause I haven't yet figured out how this new rating system exactly works. One thing is sure, though: if someone forget to add the rating it is as if the image is considered worth zero ratings and I believe that it counts for the calculation of the average rating which then obviously drops drammatically. It seems pretty unfair to me.
Anyway..... enjoy your spring and be happy. Afterall, the comments now are much more worth than silly unfair ratings. By the way this is definitely 7 to me and I'm seeing to it that I do not forget to click on the number!(ahahaha - how sad!!!)
A big HUG - Emgy

Dear Kristina, what an image with innocent and lovely expressions on your son's face. I wonderful what shooting mode you got since DOF was not enough. When shooting portrait like this, you should use portrait shooting mode, which normally gives lowest aperature (f) value, resulting wonderful portraits with great DOF.

Hi this is a wonderful photo, and I like the composition I like this bw version more than the full colour version. But that is my idée, I have reading your rating comments and I feel what you mean . But pleas sent your in your comments and ratings. Sending in pictures and receive no comments that is wasting time for the people who are sending in beautiful and good pictures like yours. Everyone likes getting a lot of comments and ratings (good or bad .) I rated a 7

Best regards,

Harry. jasper

I like this photo, Kriss, very much. Absolutely great technicaly and full of emotion. I love your son. He has a strong personality, great young man.
I have the same problem with a rating. Even more, sometime - a lots of comments, and rating 0. I rate 7, but see again - 0. It doesn't work at all. (sure, I give you 7, let's see what happened)
My warm regards,
Lena

Is he thinking, Mom not another picture/?? Such great detail and an excellent expression. I am about like you. I think the ratings are a waste of time. Actually what do the mean other than an ego trip and who needs that. I very seldom pay any attention to what ratings I get. I do find the new email notification very bad without the comments. With my slow connection it is hard to go back through all the pictures for a comment. Don.

Gustavo Eulalio   {K:3777} 5/1/2004
Hi Kristina. Very expressive shot here. I like better the BW version.

Regarding the rating thing, I really think you should forget about that. People have different ideas about the use of rating. Sometime ago there was a thread at the UF forum about people giving too many 7's because it would mean people would not be rating honest, but just to be kind. Now you complain about people not rating 7.

I myself don't mind much about it. I avail the succes of my pictures by the number of comments they receive. And I try to rate 7 only if the picture is really outstanding because I think people are here to learn too, so I explain the reasons in the comment.

Cheers.

Massimo Di Maggio Massimo Di Maggio   {K:-53658} 5/1/2004
He seems really sorry, you captured a wonderful and sweet expression, I prefer the B&N version, very well toned, because there are not distracting elements (such as colors) and I can concentrate only on his face.Told this, I feel sorry too if you spend less time to comment, you know that I love your nice and kind comments, not only to me, and maybe I love you ;) What can I do without my favourite Swedish girl!!!!!!!!!! :((((((((

Of course I understand your point of view and I agree with you that the new rating system is a bit boring. Usually I comment without rating unless I?m the first or if I want to increase the rating, minutes ago I did a try and I rated 6 a photo (not 7!!!) and the rating went down from 6.0 to 5.8, now the photographer hates me. If I gave the points at school in this way, the pupils would kill me!!! And they would be fully right!! Maybe the only thing we can do is? waiting and seeing how the situation evolves, I can?t think that this is the final rating system.

Dear Kriss? I wish you a very good time and great, fantastic, wonderful shots and I hope to see them soon, very soon, don?t leave us alone for too much time. Lot of kisses!!!! Max :)

PS: I didn't rated you, now you have 5.8, don't want to make you fall to -18.9 ;)))))

Chris Spracklen   {K:32552} 5/1/2004
Hi Kris,
I share your feelings. I've stopped rating pictures now as I feel the whole system is almost corrupt! Perhaps that's too strong a word, but how many pictures truly deserve a perfect mark? Are we saying they can't be improved. And yet I was beginning to feel a little upset if I wasn't given a 7!! How crazy is that?!
My feeling is that some honest, yet encouraging commenting is far more helpful and rewarding than ratings. They are so subjective, and so inconsistent from person to person, that I feel they have little real value. So I will give words, not numbers, from now on.
This is a fine portrait of your son. He looks truly repentant! But, even if he was in trouble, who could resist those eyes and stay angry for long?!
Kind regards my Usefilm friend,
Chris

I love this shot, and love the color version. His eyes are so big and innocent--and I love the dirt around the mouth.

As far as ratings go....it's the comments that count---but for most of us, anyting under 6 can be hard, especially after always getting 6 & 7's.. I am thinking of going "critique only" as I recently have seen more and more of my usefilm "friends" going that route. Not sure if this makes sense....I hear ya on the ratings....very discouraging.

Hi Kriss, Just as I am becomming more and more attached to your work....;o) Very good portrait, and a very well balanced composition. He looks somewhat disappointed there!
