About OK - now don't snigger, snort or giggle! :-) Imagine this - I am at a nursery filled with people. I notice this butterfly that flutters around the flowers, flapping it's wings just like a hummingbird. It stays still for a micro second before it flies off to the next flower. So I get myself in between the plants and try to shoot it. There was NO way of trying to get a better angle - I already had my body contorted and must have been a terrible sight from behind!

But ... I got it!! Albeit a far cry from the quality that we see from Bill Ciavara, Steve Bowden and others. I am proud of this - my first butterfly - and hopefully one day I will look back at this image, point at it and say "Oh no! I posted THAT on UseFilm!!" :-))

One thing though - at least it had the good sense to pose on a pink flower!

Update : as we now all know, my butterfly is in fact an old big fat moth I guess I will be in hot persuit of the real thing :-))

Brilliant. There is nothing that would make it any better than it already is.

Even for a moth, this guy has character and some nice texture in his wings. I know what you mean about contorting your body to try to get pics of these darn things! I finally got two pics of them, but I think that they are moths as well...We'll get them sometime!

I think you've ended up with a beautiful butterfly (er..moth) picture! The flower gives all the colour needed, but there is still so much moth that he is definitely the point of focus!

Haha... I like you photo, it's very nice and original! And also I have had a few good laughs here reading all the comments plus your replies!

Moth or butterfly... doesn't really matter, they are very similar, aren't they? But I though moths were active at nights.

Morning Rawabi
Hardly any sharpening. Bright sunlight, moth was almost inside the lens :-) and this was that split second that it sat without moving. It's a very hairy creature, insipid colours and full of pollen.

it's beautiful Linn..:) however i think you sharpened it a lot in PS that it's starting to have harsh texture.. other than that it's great.. love the colors and composition.. worth the "terrible sight" everyone had to bare with! ;-P

Even though this isn't your 1st butterfly, you can certainly be proud of your 1st moth. This is excellent macro work.
Best wishes,
Jimmy

Dear Linn, the plant "Lavandula angustifolia" in the cupboard (lavandula spica L. or lavandula latifolia Villars) is the better for the moth. Very good composition, detail and colour....Great work, congrats.

Hi Linn,

It's a moth, they do tend to flutter their wings more than butterflies! :) That explains it now! Thanks for the reply. Now I have to go look up what is the specific difference between the two, but there IS a difference...(I think...LOL)
Lori :)

Amazing 2nd photo, thanks for sending it!

Linn Currie   {K:24426} 5/8/2004

Lori, no effect used. Just pure luck getting it into focus! :-))
I don't even know if it is a butterfly? It is very hairy, and it had a lot of pollen on it too. Do moths also collect pollen?

Here's the same butterfly. This is how it was "drinking" from the flowers - very similar to a hummingbird, isn't it? It almost never stopped flapping it's wings.

Your posting is just beautiful Linn! Very colourful and sharp at the places it should be sharp. I like the background colours in contrast with the bright colours of the flower and butterfly a lot. Be proud of this capture!!! Greetings,
Diana.

Hi Linn,

I DON'T HAVE A BUTTERFLY yet. Don't see many of them for some reason, not sure why!

Good catch, one you really had to 'bend over backwards' for! LOL

Yes, at least it landed on your kind of flower!! I'm curious what kind of effect did you use here? While it worked on the flower center, did it make the butterfly look grainy and a little blur? Or, was this a strange looking butterfly??
LOL I don't know, but thought I'd ask!! :)

Nice job!!
Lori :)
