I missed the cicadas this year, but I still remember them vividly from when I was 4 and living in DC. Great depiction in all of your shots. Great photos!

Hello Dan, great picture of these cicadas. Hope you can sleep well...after all you will most likely have the chance to to take similar pictures in 17 years again when the next invasion is most likely to happen... We have seen pictures of this on TV here in Germany. They are good food for your birds, too... Kind regards, Gustav

Oh my goodness! Haha I don't even know if I should laugh or make strange faces and run away from computer! ;-))
I remember you told before once about these cikadas, and that every... was it 10 year? 20? It comes millions of them... and some people EAT them! *Shivering*
They look horrible, but same time so extremely interesting! It must really be special mood with all these around!
A week ago they actully wrote about these in Swedish newspaper, but only a very very short little article which I would most truly have missed if I didn't see your previous photo with explanation.
In Sweden we have nothing even close to this, and I find it so strange! But cool! :-))

Dan, you know what I think of your work....you are awesome. But you also know that my house is under siege by these NOT cute bugs. It's like the plague. Please don't make me look at any more of these....PLEASE!! Oh, bye the way, though I can hardly look at it....it is a tremendous shot! ...Brad

Hi Terry,
For a brief rundown on these 17-year cicadas, please see this page of my blog at:
http://therosenblog.blogspot.com/#108485038267966985
Also, I link to a great web article on Periodical Cicadas at:

These are really interesting creatures - and totally harmless! They don't seem to be afraid of humans - or much else for that matter - so they sit nicely while you photograph them.
Dan - another great Cicada photo - I never tire of them!
Best regards, SteveR

That's great Dan, do you really have that many Cicadas at the moment? We do not have many anymore due to that wonderful big city phenomena called pollution. Makes you wonder why so many people are sick, mmm.

Excellent photo Dan, I hit one of these once on a motorbike while approaching "escape velocity". Even through a leather jacket and tee-shirt the bruise took two weeks to clear. About the same amount of time it took me to clean the jacket !!

You are a cheater, hahaha, early I saw your self-portrait with the winged children and now you have put dead cicadas, hahaha, is a bad joke, i know that you already have put your portrait in your portafolio. A question: have our feathered godchildren hunted cicadas to eat? that would give them many proteins.
