you can control sharpening much better using the 'unsharp mask' command,Lucy
there are countless online and printed articles on this,but start with the guidelines in your photoshop's HELP section and i think you'll soon be happier with your images ;-)

thanks for your comment kostas. :) is there a sharpening tool on PS i can use other than the 'Sharpen' function? i don't find it works well and doesn't give me the 'sharpening' affect i want.
