About That is what this beautiful rose is called. It was almost black as a bud and difficult to photograph. Today was my third attempt and final result is a tight crop. Stunningly beautiful rose - but one of those flowers that really had me at my wits' end :-)

Linn --

Your patience really paid off here. This is beautiful! What an incredible flower. The texture on the lower black petal is spectacular, as are the deep reds. The highlights on the innermost petals are perfect. This really is a "wow".

Regards,
Anne

The beautiful velvet like petals look almost unreal.I like the way the light has caught the edge of the rose to give rim lighting.Well done.

Your floral shots always amaze me for the excellent quality.
This famous variety of rose is fascinating. I like the way you composed this image. The crop is really beatiful. Gorgeous red tones, fantastic light. I like a lot the dark between the folds of the petals.
Outstanding capture!

And by that, I don't only mean the rose.....

As I write this, I'm just taking a break photographing a sunflower. Now taht I've seen this one, I have to try even harder to come 'somewhere-near-close'.

Within a coupe of weeks, you've become one of the best floral shooters on UF,

regards,
Jeroen

I do agree that it is so difficult to take photos of red (and yellow) flowers with a digital camera (never tried with a traditional one ).
I tried several times to capture red roses and found out that the best results you achieve using small aperture and long time of exposure. Unfortunatelly ... as I like shallow DOF, so with such parameters it isn't possible.

Linn, you have done it quite well, but unfortunatelly details on the internal petals are lost in bright redness. On a pict with small DOF it would disappear in the blurness, here does not look nice (

Anyway, nice composition and light and details of the petals on the bottom of your photo.
Regards,
Moni_K
P.S. The rose itself is lovely. My favourite.

Thank you Neil - coming from you it is a great compliment!

Yes, you're right. Whenever I think "Oh WOW! this must be my best ever!" I go back to it a couple of days later and then I see all the ways I think I could have improved on it.

I got a couple of firm favourites but I suppose it won't be a surprise to you if I tell you that Robert totally disagrees and he likes some images that I cannot stand!

Have a great Sunday!

Hey Micky
Did you know I was thinking of you when I downloaded the third attempt? I was wondering whether you have found the same difficulty with the very dark and almost black tones and obviously I am pleased to hear that you do! Your confirmation made me feel a LOT better and I can now look at that rose (sitting on my antique chest of drawers) without scowling at it!

Micky - personal question - are you a male or female Micky? :-))

Linn Currie   {K:24426} 7/4/2004
:-))

No Ellen, this is one of my favourite crops :-) I like filling the image with a flower and you will see plenty of those images in my portfolio.

Reason why you have been seeing a lot of single stem roses/flowers from me lately is due to our season.

Wait till we are in our Summer and I will be back with popping florals :-)

Linn; you really did this one justice-- a beautiful blossom well captured and well presented. The dark red to black of the rose petals blends gracefully into the dark background. And the texture of the forward petal is wonderful. Cheers. Craig

SPECTACULAR Linn,

Not much left to say that 'spectacular' doesn't cover! I love it.
And the framing couldn't be more perfect if you tried!

Nice work,
Lori ;)

Neil Dolman   {K:26883} 7/3/2004
Hi Linn, this is great and at the same time unusual. It is so realistic and well photographed that i want to get the dusting cloth out and polish up those petals. The light is very good and you can almost touch them, A brilliant 3D effect. Compliments.
Now you have fired up my imagination and i will try and answer your request for you - give me a little time and i will check out for you what i think is your best flower photo :) of course if you are like me you're never quite satisfied with the results and i'm always thinking "if only..." so usually it is my last photo that i think is the best and remains that way till the next photo comes along. That's it from me for tonight!
Best wishes - Neil
