Bea said it so well here I think she covered it all. I do like the physical closeness of the two in this shot and the sweet expression of the girl as she gazes straight into the camera.

good morning Jim ! see your 3 kid shots. they're nice ! priceless treasured moments . how to make them "better" ? if you don't mind me saying a couple things to try to help as you asked. This image in particular.. paying attention to all details in the frame. The person on the right side is distracting and takes away from your main focus of the dad and girl. Checking entire scene in viewfinder is important. Take an entire day and follow some kids around. They'll ignore you after awhile. just keep grabbing shots. zoom in tight at times, or work at a distance. if it's a good place..ask them to turn around and look at you for a minute. or even pose which they will. shoot at their level (their height and also their imagination or play). Most of all, shoot from your heart and feel like a kid again..you'll get great shots. ( also a ton of not good ones but even a few out of alot are better than nothing. in time..the ratio will change). I hope that was helpful. You have a great start.
